Platform Engineer, Compute Capacity at Supabase

Remote 🌍 Work from Anywhere Full time Senior Posted  Apply before Nov 01, 2026

Job Description

About Supabase

Supabase is a comprehensive Postgres development platform, designed by developers for developers. It offers a complete backend solution encompassing Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime capabilities, and Vector Search. All services are deeply integrated and built to support growth and scalability.

About the Role

Supabase is looking for a skilled Platform Engineer to join the Compute Capacity team. This team is crucial for maintaining a proactive capacity plan, ensuring compute supply consistently outpaces demand across all operational regions. This involves forecasting, buffer policy management, and provisioning systems to prevent project limitations due to unforeseen resource constraints.

In this role, you will develop and manage systems that translate capacity plans into reality, including reservation acquisition, fleet reconciliation, and automation to synchronize commitments with actual running infrastructure. You will also be responsible for creating metrics and alerting mechanisms to detect capacity issues months in advance, aligning with vendor lead times, rather than at the point of impact.

You will design, build, and operate robust, highly automated systems. Your work will help maintain appropriate buffers efficiently, prevent drift from becoming a shortage, and provide all teams with a reliable view of available capacity across millions of managed databases.

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Supabase's compute capacity plan, ensuring supply consistently meets demand across various regions and instance families.
  • Support buffer policy implementation by modeling headroom targets and their associated cost implications for review and approval.
  • Build and maintain automation tools for capacity provisioning, including reservation acquisition, top-ups, fleet reconciliation, and detection of discrepancies between committed and running capacity.
  • Enhance the infrastructure as code framework for capacity-related provisioning.
  • Instrument capacity monitoring by building and maintaining metrics for saturation, reservation coverage, idle buffer, forecast accuracy, and provisioning latency.
  • Develop and fine-tune capacity alerting systems to ensure headroom, quota, and reservation problems are identified months ahead, rather than at the moment of impact.
  • Support the demand gate process, assisting with the intake of large customer commitments, new launches, migrations, and new regions to integrate them into the capacity plan.
  • Contribute to mitigation projects such as right-sizing, instance-family migrations, autoscaling enhancements, and workload consolidation.
  • Help reduce compute cost per database through initiatives in right-sizing, optimal placement, and commitment coverage.
  • Participate in capacity incident response and follow-up activities.

You Might Be A Good Fit If You

  • Possess 5+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), platform engineering, or capacity engineering, ideally within a SaaS or cloud infrastructure environment.
  • Have hands-on production software engineering experience, including owning and operating a service (not just scripting).
  • Are proficient in modern programming languages such as TypeScript, Python, and Go.
  • Are comfortable working with incomplete forecasts and assumptions, and can adapt your work as these assumptions evolve.
  • Have experience with Infrastructure as Code tools like Pulumi or Terraform.
  • Have built or maintained robust observability for systems you manage, including metrics that provide actionable insights and reliable alerting (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, CloudWatch, or similar).
  • Have a strong working knowledge of AWS EC2, including instance families, generations, purchase options, capacity reservations, and quota mechanics.
  • Possess some financial literacy, understanding reservation economics and the basic tradeoffs between coverage, utilization, and cost.
  • Demonstrate clear communication skills, effective across diverse audiences, from engineers to finance stakeholders.
