Role Overview: Staff Machine Learning Engineer

As a visionary and hands-on Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will define the technical direction and execute Growth and Engagement ML initiatives at Phantom. This pivotal role bridges advanced machine learning with core business strategy, focusing on systems that enhance user acquisition, retention, lifetime value (LTV), and product engagement. You will lead the complete lifecycle of complex ML models, mentor senior engineers, and collaborate closely with Product, Data Science, and Marketing leadership to significantly impact key business metrics.

Key Responsibilities:

• Technical Leadership & Strategy: Develop the long-term technical roadmap for Growth and Engagement ML systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and measurable business impact. Design and deploy production-grade ML pipelines and real-time decisioning systems for personalization, notifications, and onboarding. Evaluate and integrate cutting-edge ML techniques, including multi-armed bandits, reinforcement learning, LLMs for content generation, and advanced graph neural networks.
• Execution & Modeling: Design, train, and validate sophisticated models for user lifecycle stages, such as churn propensity, LTV forecasting, next-best-action, and lookalike modeling. Build and optimize recommendation engines and semantic search systems to deliver highly relevant content, products, and features to users. Establish robust experimentation frameworks (advanced A/B testing, causal inference, multi-variate testing) for rigorous model validation in production.
• Collaboration & Mentorship: Partner with Product and Growth marketing teams to translate business hypotheses into precise, actionable machine learning problems. Mentor and coach senior engineers across data and ML organizations, cultivating a culture of technical excellence. Advocate for best practices in ML engineering, including model monitoring, feature store utilization, reproducible training pipelines, and data governance.

Qualifications & Skills:

Experience:

• Minimum of 8 years in machine learning engineering, data science, or software engineering, with at least 3 years in a Staff, Principal, or Tech Lead role.
• Demonstrated success in building and scaling ML systems within growth, marketing technology, recommendation engines, or consumer engagement domains.
• Extensive experience with large-scale data processing and distributed computing environments.

Technical Proficiencies:

• Languages: Expert proficiency in Python, Scala, or Java.
• ML Frameworks: Strong command of PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, or XGBoost.
• Data & MLOps Infrastructure: Experience with Spark, Flink, Kafka, Snowflake/BigQuery, Ray, Kubeflow, MLflow, or SageMaker.
• Experimentation: Deep understanding of causal inference, uplift modeling, and robust statistical testing.

Core Competencies:

• Business Acumen: Ability to directly link algorithmic improvements to key growth metrics like MAU/DAU, conversion rates, and retention.
• Communication: Exceptional ability to articulate complex technical architectures and algorithmic choices to non-technical stakeholders and executives.
