FinOps Cloud Financial Engineer at Supabase at Supabase
Job Description
About Supabase
Supabase is a comprehensive Postgres development platform designed by developers, for developers. We offer a full backend solution encompassing Database, Authentication, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime capabilities, and Vector Search. All our services are deeply integrated and engineered to support scalable growth for modern applications.
About the Role
We are actively seeking a FinOps Cloud Financial Engineer to spearhead cost optimization and cloud financial governance across our extensive AWS infrastructure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) footprint. This role involves close collaboration with Engineering, Finance, and Product teams to identify and implement cost savings, develop essential tooling for maximizing cloud spending efficiency, and foster a strong culture of cost awareness among engineering teams.
This is a hands-on engineering position, not merely an analyst role. You will dive into the details, such as analyzing storage bucket access patterns, developing Terraform or Python Lambda functions to deploy fixes, reconciling product feature costs, and influencing product architectural decisions when cost versus reliability trade-offs arise. Exceptional communication skills are as vital as technical expertise, as you will regularly articulate savings opportunities to engineering teams, finance stakeholders, and leadership audiences.
What You'll Be Responsible For
- Discover and Implement Cloud Savings: Systematically analyze billing, usage, and cost trends across AWS and GCP to pinpoint optimization opportunities, including rightsizing resources, implementing storage lifecycle policies, managing data transfer costs, and utilizing spot instances or auto scaling. Drive these initiatives from initial identification through to measurable financial savings, beyond just recommendations.
- Build and Maintain Cost Attribution Systems: Develop and enforce robust tagging policies, cost allocation models, and chargeback/showback mechanisms. This empowers engineering teams with visibility and ownership over their cloud expenditures, forming a critical foundation for further savings initiatives.
- Automate Cloud Cost Governance: Design and build automated cost reporting, anomaly detection, and alerting systems. Develop scripts and infrastructure as code (using Python, Terraform) to ensure compliance with cost policies, reducing reliance on manual reviews.
- Collaborate on Architecture Decisions: Integrate cost considerations into the early stages of architectural design. It is significantly more cost effective to optimize designs upfront than to retrofit solutions later.
- Support Financial Forecasting and Reporting: Work with the Finance team to support budget tracking and key financial performance indicators. Develop intuitive dashboards that are accessible and valuable to both engineering and finance teams.
You Might Be a Good Fit If You
- Possess strong expertise in AWS and practical working knowledge of GCP, including an understanding of their pricing models, billing structures, and various cost optimization strategies.
- Have strong automation and scripting skills, particularly with Python and/or infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
- Are proficient with cloud cost/billing tools such as AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Cost & Usage Reports, GCP Billing Reports, and business intelligence/dashboarding platforms (we use Hex).
- Have experience with, or are quick to learn, project management tools like Linear and Notion for tracking and documenting FinOps initiatives.
- Experience with dedicated cloud cost management platforms (e.g., CloudZero, Vantage) is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Can effectively analyze complex cost data and present insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Have previous experience in a FinOps, cloud cost management, or cloud governance specific role.
- Are motivated by tackling challenging, high impact work that enables other teams, and thrive in cross-functional environments without needing positional authority.
