Product Manager, Developer Workflow at Supabase
Job Description
About Supabase
Supabase is a leading Postgres development platform, designed by developers for developers. We offer a comprehensive backend solution featuring Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime capabilities, and Vector Search. All our services are deeply integrated and built for scalable growth. Supabase is the open-source Postgres development platform trusted by over 10 million developers and thousands of enterprises daily.
We are seeking a Product Manager specializing in Branching to oversee the entire change lifecycle from local development to production. This includes local CLI development, migrations, seed data, configuration as code, isolated branches for pull requests, GitHub integration for testing, and seamless promotion to production. With agents increasingly automating parts of this workflow, the path must be efficient for both human developers and automated processes, supporting parallel branching, constant migrations, and rapid feedback.
Responsibilities
- Engage with a diverse range of customers, from indie developers using the CLI to startups implementing branch-per-pull-request workflows, platforms provisioning environments, and enterprise teams requiring a structured development-to-production route. Identify the underlying needs behind feature requests to inform the product roadmap.
- Ensure a cohesive developer experience across tools like the CLI, migrations, seeds, configuration, branches, and Git integration. Define the boundaries between tools and maintain a clear mental model for the workflow.
- Take ownership of launch outcomes, defining measurement metrics and thresholds before shipping. Track key metrics such as a developer's first migration time, branch adoption rates, and the proportion of teams shipping via a reviewed workflow. Use these insights to guide future decisions.
- Articulate the problem statement and commercial rationale for all product initiatives. Gather customer evidence, define constraints (e.g., provisioning latency, compute capacity, environment cost, data retention), and set performance targets. Strategically manage what remains free for developers versus what companies pay for, considering compute costs per environment.
- Prioritize development efforts quarterly, balancing local development ergonomics, support for partner platforms, enterprise release requirements, and essential infrastructure work. Understand the path's Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and the impact of exceeding error budgets on the roadmap. Defend priorities and proactively document non-scope items to manage mid-flight requests.
- Maintain alignment across engineering, design, and leadership teams. Your roadmap will span compute, storage, the CLI, the dashboard, and GitHub integration. Document plans thoroughly, identify dependencies early, and facilitate timely decision-making.
Qualifications
You might be a strong candidate if you meet the following criteria:
- Possess 7+ years of product management experience with a focus on developer tools, or have a background as a founder with strong product instincts. This role requires technical depth, meaning you can follow design discussions, delve into code when necessary (with or without AI assistance), and formulate requirements based on system functionality.
- Have successfully shipped developer-workflow products. Experience owning areas such as local development tooling, migrations, CI/CD, ephemeral or preview environments, or Git-integrated deployments is essential. You should understand the trade-offs involved in various approaches, such as CLI vs. dashboard, schema-only vs. data-rich environments, copy-on-write clones vs. dump-and-restore, the cost implications of branching and merging stateful systems, and the optimal level of configuration in files. Familiarity with the Postgres ecosystem (migrations, extensions, tooling) is a valuable bonus.
- Demonstrate a bias toward action, breaking large initiatives into smaller, shippable increments. Treat each release as an opportunity to test assumptions and deliver high-quality products that minimize future support burdens. Your measure of speed is the rapid achievement of desired outcomes.
- Actively use the products you own. You should regularly engage with the workflow, running local projects, managing migrations and seeds via version control, opening branches for pull requests, and confidently promoting changes to production, even on a Friday.
- Utilize AI tools to enhance efficiency, automating repetitive tasks to focus on critical judgment calls.
- Work asynchronously by default, making decisions in writing and advancing discussions without requiring numerous meetings.
