Job Description

About Counterpart

Counterpart is an innovative insurtech platform transforming management and professional liability for today's dynamic workplaces. Our mission is to empower businesses with clarity and confidence, enabling them to be more resilient, innovative, and prepared for future challenges. We've developed the first Agentic Insurance™ system, which integrates advanced AI with deep insurance expertise to proactively assess, mitigate, and manage risk. Supported by A-rated carriers and trusted by brokers across the nation, our platform is designed to help small businesses expand with confidence.

In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in building the systems and conditions necessary for a small, agile team to manage a national platform. Your focus will be on identifying and eliminating bottlenecks, ensuring they do not resurface, and allowing our product, underwriting, and engineering teams to maintain the rapid pace required by the company. This position encompasses every aspect of an insurance product's lifecycle, from coverage language and pricing to filings and distribution, while also deeply engaging with how an AI native company operates. We are seeking an individual with exceptional operational rigor, demonstrating relentless follow through, rapid learning capabilities, and the sound judgment to keep cross functional teams on track and efficient, regardless of complexity.

How You Operate

  • Identify and resolve the most significant bottleneck within a function, then strategically move to the next. Your success will be measured by problems cleared, not merely documented.
  • Prioritize removing unnecessary steps before implementing new ones.
  • Integrate AI into your daily workflow, aspiring to be one of the company's heaviest AI users.

Own New Product Launches, End to End

  • Lead new product launches from initial kickoff through to autonomous operation, minimizing day-to-day involvement post-launch.
  • Translate product strategy into precise specifications for pricing, data, and engineering teams, preventing misinterpretations or loss of requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering and data teams to establish the build order and uphold it against competing priorities.

Turn Expert Judgment Into Systems

  • Develop intuitive mechanisms for underwriting and pricing experts to directly input their rules and judgments into our systems, eliminating the need to route through you.
  • Maintain consistent terminology across all systems, models, and teams, adapting it as the business scales.
  • Implement fast and accurate feedback loops from policies, claims, and lost deals to quickly identify what is effective and what requires adjustment.

Own Change Control and Quality

  • Establish and manage a clear, singular process for any modifications to our product offerings (coverage, rules, pricing), preventing ad hoc changes.
  • Proactively identify and resolve issues during testing phases before they impact customers.
  • Migrate existing programs onto shared infrastructure, reducing reliance on separate, one off setups.

You Have

  • 7+ years of experience in solving complex problems through process and product development, or a demonstrated history of consistently expanding scope and responsibility.
  • A systems thinking approach, with a deep commitment to solving problems and creating scalable solutions, rather than temporary fixes.
  • Outstanding project management and documentation skills, capable of managing multiple concurrent workstreams without overlooking details.
  • A self-starter mentality, comfortable thriving in a lean, fast paced environment.
  • Genuine, daily comfort with AI agents, including delegating tasks, reviewing their output, and improving their performance. You instinctively automate a task upon its second occurrence.
  • Demonstrated grit, showcasing instances where you persevered through challenges even when quitting would have been easier.
  • An insurance background is beneficial but not mandatory. Exposure to policy forms, rate and rule filings, or systems like SERFF is a bonus, not a prerequisite.

Who You Will Work With

  • Tobias Schuler, Chief Underwriting Officer: A Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, Tobias previously drove actuarial data and systems at QBE and headed data and analytics at Munich Re Digital Partners North America, where he oversaw data infrastructure for major programs.
  • Dave Lin, Head of Product and Engineering: Dave has built and scaled B2B platforms at Yext, Apple, Amazon, and Hookit. He holds MS and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego.
  • Stanley Wang, Senior Director, Pricing Analytics: Prior to Counterpart, Stanley worked as an actuary in pricing solutions at USAA, integrating actuarial pricing with data science models. He was also a lead data scientist at Munich Re's Digital Partners, specializing in data science models for insurtechs, and has experience in capital modeling and risk management.
  • Chris Shafer, Chief of Staff: A published scientific author, Chris has launched numerous businesses, holding critical roles in product management, business operations, and strategic partnerships. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California.

What We Offer

  • Unlimited PTO: Enjoy flexible time off to use as needed.
  • Work from Anywhere: Counterpart is a fully distributed company with no physical office. Employees are encouraged to work from their preferred location, with optional in person team gatherings a few times per year.
  • Equity/Stock Options
  • Health, Dental, and Vision Coverage
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Home Office Stipend: To help equip your home office with necessary gear.
  • Learning Budget: Includes a book stipend and professional development reimbursement.
  • Wellness Programs: Including a wellness stipend.
  • No Working Birthdays: Take your birthday off to relax and celebrate.
  • Charitable Contribution Matching

Counterpart's Values

  • Conjoin Expectations: The foundation of autonomy. Be clear about what is expected of you and articulate your expectations of others.
  • Speak Boldly & Honestly: Learning from mistakes is key. Provide and seek feedback to ensure expectations are met.
  • Be Entrepreneurial: Control your destiny. Prioritize action over perfection in overcoming obstacles to achieve your goals.
  • Practice Omotenashi (“Selfless Hospitality”): Build trust. View every interaction as an opportunity to develop trust by exceeding expectations.
  • Hold Nothing As Sacred: Create routines but routinely modify them. Reflect on the business's current state, future direction, and necessary changes to get there.
  • Prioritize Wellness: Some things are non-negotiable. We foster an environment of growth and improvement, but recognize it is only one component of a fulfilling life.

Our estimated pay range for this role is $170,000 to $200,000. Base salary is determined by factors such as market data, location, internal equity, and experience. We are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive workplace where everyone feels respected, supported, and connected, regardless of background. We celebrate our differences and believe openness enables us to do our best work. Counterpart is an Equal Opportunity Employer, prohibiting discrimination based on various protected characteristics.
