About the Senior Quality Engineer Role

We are seeking a Senior Quality Engineer (SQE) to play a pivotal role in embedding quality practices throughout our product development lifecycle. Our SQEs collaborate extensively across multiple product teams, partnering with Engineering, Product Leads, and Design departments within various areas of Circle. You will be actively involved from the initial stages of development, exploring new ideas, proactively identifying potential risks, challenging assumptions, and guiding teams to make superior decisions regarding product quality. This is a hands-on, collaborative position ideal for someone passionate about being closely involved with the product, adept at navigating different problem domains, and committed to elevating the visibility of Quality Engineering across the entire organization. You will leverage strong product understanding, advanced exploratory testing techniques, automation expertise, and technical investigation skills to ensure confident and reliable product releases.

Key Responsibilities

Product Quality

  • Partner effectively with multiple product teams across diverse areas of the Circle platform.
  • Engage early in product, design, and engineering discussions to influence quality outcomes.
  • Identify critical product, technical, and customer risks.
  • Contribute a quality-first perspective to user journeys, UI/UX designs, requirements, and technical implementations.
  • Develop pragmatic, risk-based testing strategies tailored to specific changes and their potential impact.

Automation & Technical Quality

  • Build and maintain robust, reliable automated test coverage across web, APIs, and integrations.
  • Strategically decide what to automate, where to execute tests, and what yields the most impactful signals.
  • Investigate complex system failures spanning the application, APIs, CI pipelines, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with engineers to enhance testability, system reliability, and developer feedback loops.
  • Utilize modern engineering tools and AI-assisted technologies to improve planning, automation, debugging, or investigation processes.

Quality Strategy & Enablement

  • Identify and address recurring or systemic quality issues, driving continuous improvements across teams.
  • Leverage insights from bugs, production incidents, and quality metrics to enhance prevention strategies, not just detection.
  • Empower teams to make informed decisions concerning risk, test coverage, and release confidence.
  • Share valuable knowledge and best practices to strengthen quality ownership throughout the Engineering department.

What You'll Need to Be Successful

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English (CEFR C2 or equivalent) are essential, as Circle primarily operates asynchronously.
  • Extensive experience working as a Quality Engineer within contemporary product engineering teams.
  • Strong proficiency in web test automation using Playwright, TypeScript, or similar robust technologies.
  • Solid understanding of API and integration testing methodologies.
  • Proven expertise in exploratory and risk-based testing.
  • Confidence in reading application code and effectively debugging intricate technical issues.
  • Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated test execution.
  • Strong product judgment, demonstrating a genuine concern for the user experience beyond mere technical functionality.
  • Comfortable navigating multiple teams and product areas, adept at quickly switching context and assimilating new information.
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy, identifying where your contributions will generate the most value.
  • Confident in asking pertinent questions, constructively challenging assumptions, and influencing decisions.
  • A collaborative and pragmatic approach to effectively balance quality, risk, and delivery timelines.

Bonus Points for Experience In

  • Experience, interest, or strong potential in developing quality platforms, test infrastructure, automation frameworks, developer tooling, or other reusable quality-enabling systems. We are particularly interested in SQEs who enjoy solving quality problems in scalable ways.
  • Mobile testing, specifically React Native, iOS, or Android platforms.
  • Payments or integration-heavy products.
  • Observability and production monitoring tools and practices.
  • Performance and load testing strategies.
  • CI/CD and build infrastructure management.
  • Developer experience or engineering productivity initiatives.

Compensation & Benefits

Circle provides globally competitive compensation benchmarked against U.S. standards. This includes equity in the company with ongoing refresh grants, and a generous 35 days of paid time off annually. As a remote-only team, we facilitate company retreats twice a year in stunning international locations. Alongside unparalleled flexibility and autonomy, we offer a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your health, wellbeing, and professional development.
