Job Description

About Atticus

Atticus is a mission-driven company dedicated to helping Americans in crisis access life-changing legal and government aid. With over $100 million raised from top VC firms like Forerunner, Google Ventures, and True Ventures, Atticus has become a leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits and assisting victims in obtaining compensation. The company has helped hundreds of thousands of individuals secure over $10 billion in aid, earning over 20,000 five-star reviews. As a certified B Corporation, Atticus is committed to making a significant social impact and is rapidly growing towards becoming a category-defining business.

The Opportunity: Lead Infrastructure Engineer

Atticus is seeking a Lead Infrastructure Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping the company's technical foundation. This individual will be the second infrastructure engineer on the team, working closely with Jereme to define and implement robust infrastructure, platforms, and tooling. The goal is to empower product engineering teams to ship quickly and reliably, establishing practices that support long-term sustainable growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • **Infrastructure Ownership:** Treat infrastructure as a product, serving Atticus's product engineering teams as internal customers.
  • **Strategic Roadmap Development:** Shape the infrastructure roadmap, articulate a clear vision for future infrastructure needs, and drive its implementation.
  • **Foundational Building:** Establish critical security and operational foundations to support scalable growth.
  • **Reliability Enhancement:** Improve system reliability by reducing Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR), defining Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and enhancing outage management processes.
  • **Team Empowerment:** Develop platforms and tools that enable product teams to take full ownership of their systems, fostering an end-to-end responsibility culture.

This is a senior individual contributor (IC) role, reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, Toby. The successful candidate will significantly influence infrastructure strategy while remaining hands-on with coding and direct shipping within a dynamic 20-person engineering team.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • **Infrastructure Expertise:** 5+ years of experience in infrastructure, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or platform engineering roles, demonstrating broad knowledge across various infrastructure disciplines. This role requires an infrastructure generalist rather than a deep specialist in one narrow area.
  • **Cloud and IaC Proficiency:** Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (Google Cloud Platform, GCP, preferred) and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi).
  • **Software Engineering Fundamentals:** A strong understanding of core software engineering principles, approaching infrastructure with a builder's mindset.
  • **Technical Breadth:** Knowledgeable across multiple infrastructure domains, including networking, security, observability, CI/CD, database operations, and containerization. While not an expert in every area, the ability to be effective on a small team without additional specialists is crucial.
  • **System Experience:** Prior experience with consumer-facing, revenue-critical systems is essential, though FAANG-scale experience is not required.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • **Startup Infrastructure Leadership:** Experience leading infrastructure evolution at a growing startup, particularly on a small infrastructure team (fewer than 5 engineers), rather than merely maintaining existing systems.
  • **Ambiguity Tolerance:** A proactive approach to environments with minimal structure, demonstrating the ability to understand the bigger picture, navigate ambiguity, and prioritize effectively.

Atticus is strongly committed to building a diverse team and encourages applications from individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in technology.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a unique opportunity to join a startup with strong market traction, substantial funding, reputable backers, significant growth, and a large base of satisfied customers. Despite this success, the company remains small enough for new hires to have a huge impact and shape its culture. Atticus, as a certified B Corporation, is driven by a mission to assist people in need, ensuring that all work directly contributes to improving lives.

Competitive Compensation and Comprehensive Benefits Package:

  • **Medical and Dental Insurance:** 100% of premiums covered for employees and their families.
  • **Paid Time Off:** 15 vacation days and approximately 20 paid holidays annually, including a two-week company-wide break at year-end.
  • **Wellness:** Free membership to OneMedical.
  • **Home Office Support:** $600 per year internet stipend.
  • **Professional Development:** $1,000 per year reimbursable stipend for external education and training.
  • **Financial Assistance:** Up to $1,200 per year in student loan repayment assistance.
  • **Retirement Planning:** 401(k) and optional Health Savings Accounts (HSA) / Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • **Equity:** Equity offered to all employees.
  • **Culture:** Collaborative, thoughtful, intelligent, and enjoyable colleagues.

The anticipated base salary range for this role is between $170,000 and $220,000, supplemented by equity and a comprehensive benefits package. The final salary offer will be determined based on the candidate's experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal equity considerations.

Work Location

This position is fully remote, and Atticus is dedicated to providing maximum flexibility for its employees. Work remotely from any location, with company-sponsored travel to Los Angeles for team gatherings, typically quarterly offsites. Atticus values in-person interactions for fostering culture and thoughtfully plans retreats and other opportunities for team connection.
