Job Description

Backend Engineer, Source Code: Repository Services

GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps. We empower organizations to increase developer productivity, improve operational efficiency, reduce security and compliance risk, and accelerate digital transformation. With over 50 million registered users and over 50% of the Fortune 100 trusting GitLab, we foster a high-performance culture driven by our values and continuous knowledge exchange.

We are seeking a Backend Engineer to join our Repository Services team within GitLab's Create stage. This team is responsible for owning the repository side of Source Code, including how code enters a repository, who modifies it, and how those changes are verified.

As a member of this new team, you will build upon primitives provided by the Gitaly team, utilizing Ruby and GraphQL across GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. In the initial phase, the team focuses heavily on ensuring reliability and support through performance tuning, structured query language optimization, caching, rate limiting, testing, observability, and resiliency.

What You Will Do

  • Develop secure, well-tested, and performant features and enhancements using Ruby and GraphQL.
  • Navigate complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clear, robust solutions while preserving the reliability of this critical system.
  • Design and maintain backend services, application programming interfaces, data models, and business logic governing the code repository workflow and verification process.
  • Build effectively on the primitives offered by the Gitaly team and collaborate closely with that team.
  • Triage and resolve bugs and support requests for the features under the team's ownership.
  • Collaborate across various functions and teams both synchronously and asynchronously, engaging domain experts when their input is necessary to improve outcomes.
  • Leverage artificial intelligence agents for well-defined tasks that can accelerate delivery without compromising quality, and critically review their resulting output.
  • Write highly maintainable code adhering to GitLab's standards and actively contribute to constructive code reviews.
  • Strengthen system reliability by monitoring production health metrics, participating in Tier 2 on-call rotation, troubleshooting incidents, contributing to root cause analysis, and enhancing observability and resiliency.
  • Share knowledge through code reviews, technical documentation, and daily collaboration while learning from colleagues.

What You Will Bring

  • Professional experience in building backend web applications, services, or application programming interfaces, with demonstrated proficiency in Ruby and GraphQL.
  • Solid understanding of relational databases, structured query language, data modeling, caching strategies, background processing, and backend performance best practices.
  • Experience contributing to and maintaining underlying systems for user-facing workflows.
  • Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, with familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review processes.
  • Familiarity with using artificial intelligence coding agents and reviewing their output, or a strong interest in developing these skills within a complex monorepo environment.
  • Clear written and spoken English communication skills, including providing useful status updates in a remote and asynchronous setting.
  • The ability to manage assigned priorities, work through ambiguity, take full ownership of your work, and proactively seek guidance when necessary.

About the Team

Repository Services is a small, nascent backend team, formed in September 2026 following the split of Source Code into specialized teams. As this organizational structure finalizes, we expect to take ownership of repository mirroring, Git Large File Storage (LFS), protected branches, push rules, Code Owners, and commit and tag signing. Our work is foundational to GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated, built directly on Gitaly's primitives.
