Senior Engineering Manager at Atticus

Remote United States 🌍 Work from Anywhere Full time Senior USD195,000 - USD264,500 Posted  Apply before Nov 25, 2026

Job Description

Are you passionate about driving impactful change? Join Atticus, a mission-driven company dedicated to removing barriers between people in crisis and the legal aid they deserve. We are revolutionizing how individuals access government benefits and compensation from accidents and misconduct. We've already helped hundreds of thousands of people access over $10 billion in life-changing aid and are backed by top VC firms like Forerunner and Google Ventures.

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Engineering Manager to own one of our product pods, reporting directly to Toby, our VP of Engineering. This role requires leadership in shaping team health and growth while being deeply involved in the technical work shipped by your small, cross-functional pod (4-6 engineers, a PM, and a designer).

Your Role and Responsibilities

As an Engineering Manager at Atticus, you will be a hands-on leader. You will be accountable for both the health and growth of your team and the success of the product pods you manage. Your duties include:

  • Shaping an ambitious product roadmap and driving the work to achieve it.
  • Shaping your team’s culture and refining processes.
  • Actively developing the careers of the engineers you manage.
  • Staying close to the code, reviewing Pull Requests, and contributing to architectural discussions.

Depending on your background, you may contribute to areas such as:

  • Consumer product experimentation to build intuitive and informative user experiences.
  • Optimizing the intake experience for people in crisis by getting clients to the right legal professionals.
  • Scaling our tools for attorneys by delivering software for both our network and our in-house law firm.
  • Driving early-stage product development for an AI-native legal product to automate inefficient manual processes.

Qualifications Required

  • You must have managed a team of at least three engineers for more than three years.
  • Proven ability to mentor and grow engineers, including senior individual contributors and those early in their careers, while confidently handling difficult performance conversations.
  • Experience working in a high-performing product organization with strong Product Managers and Designers, and a deep understanding of engineer ownership over product outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively with ambiguity and limited resources, whether in a startup environment or when carving out a role within a larger company.
  • Serious, hands-on experience using AI coding tools in your own work over the past year, including a clear perspective on their utility and proper implementation.
  • You are hands-on. You write code, review it, and possess strong opinions on system design.

Nice To Have Skills

  • Experience hiring and leading engineers during periods of rapid headcount expansion.
  • Hands-on proficiency with our core stack: Go, TypeScript and Next.js, Temporal, or GCP. (Note: Quick ramp up on technical context is valued over specific tool experience).
  • A background in industries involving complex professional workflows, such as legal, healthcare, or financial services.

Salary, Benefits, and Culture

This is a rare chance to join a highly funded, growing startup that is solving a critical social problem, allowing you to have a massive impact while shaping our culture. We are a certified B Corporation.

Compensation: We offer competitive pay including equity for all employees. The anticipated base salary band for this role is between $195,000 and $264,500, with the final offer dependent on experience and internal equity.

Benefits: We offer a generous benefits package:

  • Medical and dental insurance with 100% premium coverage for employees and their families.
  • 15 vacation days and approximately 20 paid holidays annually (including two weeks at year-end).
  • Free membership to OneMedical.
  • $600/year internet stipend.
  • $1,000/year reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work.
  • Up to $1,200/year student loan repayment assistance.
  • 401(k) options and optional HSA/FSA.
  • A supportive culture built by humble, thoughtful, and smart colleagues.

Location and Work Model

This position is fully remote. We are committed to empowering our team with maximum flexibility. Travel to Los Angeles is occasionally required (on company dime) for quarterly meetings and offsites to foster culture, but we prioritize in person interaction through planned gatherings.
