About the Role
As a Backend Software Engineer on the Data Layer team, you will be instrumental in building and evolving the storage and query layer that ensures Camunda 8's process data remains fast, accurate, and highly available at scale. This critical data layer, encompassing both relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, along with its data pipelines, powers essential functions from process monitoring to our innovative agent driven automation capabilities. You will tackle technically challenging and rewarding projects, such as redesigning how process data is stored and retained, streaming data to external systems, and enhancing our secondary storage systems for ever greater performance and scale. At Camunda, engineering is approached holistically, fostering strong partnerships with product management, design, QA, and support. You will collaborate with peers to not only deliver but also directly influence the evolution of our data layer to meet customer needs. Learn more about the technical challenges at Camunda by watching a 30 minute talk from our engineers on the new Camunda Exporter and how we solve complex problems at scale.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Design, build, and maintain backend services for the data layer that stores and serves Camunda 8's process data. This involves working with relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, with a strong focus on correctness, performance, and scalability.
- Own the end to end delivery of engineering initiatives, collaborating with Product Management and senior colleagues to translate requirements into concrete solution designs, and ensuring timely, high quality project delivery.
- Help evolve our methods for processing, retaining, and exposing process data, enabling customers to interact with their data seamlessly.
- Invest in making our secondary storage systems more performant and scalable as usage expands, and develop tooling that simplifies understanding, troubleshooting, and safe operation of the data layer in production.
- Participate in L3 support and on call rotations, partnering with Support and SRE teams to investigate data layer production issues, and integrate lessons learned back into the product development cycle.
What You Bring
- Ability and/or willingness to use our product.
- At least 4 years of experience as a backend engineer, with a strong focus on backend systems and production data stores.
- Hands on experience with at least one of PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL, or Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, coupled with a practical understanding of query performance, indexing, and data modeling trade offs.
- Experience contributing to complex engineering initiatives: effectively breaking down requirements into actionable tasks, crafting clear technical designs for your work, and delivering reliably.
- Comfort investigating slow queries, execution plans, and index usage to identify the root cause of data related production issues.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote first environment: adept at translating requirements into actionable technical work with Product, and providing/receiving clear, direct feedback in code review.
Nice to Haves
- Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software.
- Experience working with both relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch.
- Experience building or maintaining CI pipelines.
- Understanding of database migration tooling (e.g. Liquibase, Flyway) and schema evolution in a live system.
