Engineering Manager, Billing Systems (Remote) at Supabase
Job Description
Supabase is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead their Billing team. Supabase provides a Postgres development platform, offering a comprehensive backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. These services are deeply integrated and designed for scalability.
About the Role
As the Engineering Manager for the Billing team, you will oversee the monetization and revenue systems, transforming platform usage into precise customer charges and finance-ready revenue data. The team's responsibilities encompass plans, subscriptions, usage-based billing, invoices, payments, credits, coupons, taxation, dunning, collections, pricing mechanics, entitlements, marketplace, partner billing, and integrations with providers like Stripe and Orb. This critical role operates at the intersection of engineering, product, finance, data, support, and partnerships. The systems are revenue-critical and trust-critical, demanding correctness, predictability, supportability, observability, and extensibility as Supabase grows and introduces new products and pricing models.
This position is focused on people, delivery, and technical leadership. While direct production code contribution is not expected, active participation in architecture and design discussions, challenging plans with sound technical reasoning, and upholding high standards for correctness, reliability, and operational maturity are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Team & People Leadership
- Cultivate a healthy, high-trust team culture within a remote-first, globally distributed environment.
- Conduct 1:1s, performance management, career development, and onboarding for direct reports.
- Coach engineers working across backend application code, data pipelines, external integrations, and operational workflows.
- Establish durable ownership within the team to ensure critical billing knowledge, access, and incident response are not reliant on a single individual.
- Manage people administration, including leave and time off.
Hiring
- Own the hiring plan for the Billing team, acting as Hiring Manager and first-round interviewer.
- Collaborate with Talent Acquisition to source, interview, and onboard strong candidates with billing domain depth and engineering judgment.
- Contribute to headcount planning, organizational design, and the evolution of engineering leadership at Supabase.
Delivery, Roadmap & Partnerships
- Oversee the Billing roadmap and project management in Linear, ensuring accountability, clear milestones, and predictable delivery.
- Balance the introduction of new pricing and product capabilities with essential investments in system correctness, resilience, supportability, and technical debt.
- Manage workflow intake and Slack triage, prioritizing and sequencing tasks effectively.
- Provide weekly updates to stakeholders, ensuring alignment without excessive overhead.
- Proactively surface risks, dependencies, tradeoffs, and potential revenue or customer-impact concerns to leadership.
Incident Commander
- Train as an Incident Commander, leading coordination, resolution, customer-impact assessment, and post-incident follow-up.
- Facilitate blameless post-incident reviews.
Who You Are
You may be an ideal candidate if you possess:
- 5+ years of engineering background with sufficient depth to engage credibly with engineers building complex systems.
- 3+ years of experience managing remote engineering teams.
- Previous experience managing a billing engineering team at a cloud, SaaS, or developer tools company. Experience with developer tools or databases is preferred, but any technical background demonstrating the ability to quickly grasp a new domain will be considered.
- Experience managing remote, globally distributed teams that operate asynchronously across various time zones.
- A strong technical foundation coupled with a genuine passion for people management.
- The ability to build psychological safety and a feedback-rich culture, giving and receiving feedback regularly.
- A "multiplier" mindset, focused on empowering individuals to achieve more collectively.
- A coaching approach, removing blockers and connecting team members to resources, while trusting engineers with execution.
- A proven track record in performance management, including navigating difficult conversations.
- Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to establish structure when needed.
- Excellent communication and writing skills, with a preference for asynchronous, written communication and proactive context setting.
- A collaborative, low-ego, and adaptable approach, thriving with highly autonomous senior individual contributors who hold strong technical opinions.
Relevant Billing Domain & Technical Expertise
Candidates should bring experience across most of the following areas:
- Subscription lifecycle and monetization mechanics: covering plans, packaging, billing cycles, upgrades/downgrades, proration, charges (upfront/in-arrears), add-ons, credits, coupons, discounts, refunds, taxes, dunning, collections, disputes, and chargebacks.
- Usage-based billing at scale: converting product telemetry into billable usage, defining meters and dimensions, applying quotas and pricing, handling late data, and supporting reruns, backfills, and reconciliation.
- Payments and billing-provider integrations: production experience with Stripe, Orb, or similar providers, including APIs, webhooks, invoice lifecycle, payment failures, event ingestion, rate limits, and graceful degradation during outages.
- Entitlements and pricing enforcement: separating feature access from charging, managing plan defaults and customer-specific overrides, and designing auditable controls.
- Cross-functional billing operations: effective collaboration with Finance, Data, Product, Support, Sales/RevOps, and Partnerships on revenue reporting, customer support, fraud risk, marketplace billing, and new pricing launches.
