Unity Technical Artist for Immersive Events at VRChat
Job Description
About VRChat
Join the VRChat team and help build the future of immersive, user generated worlds where anyone, anywhere, can connect, play, explore, and express themselves. VRChat is looking for a Unity Technical Artist to reliably, efficiently, and with a high quality bar, ship new 3D immersive events and content to its global community.
The Role: Unity Technical Artist, Live Operations
This role serves at the intersection of art and engineering. You will be hands on in Unity, write scripts and tools to streamline publishing, and ensure events and content ship smoothly across various platforms. You will collaborate closely with artists, designers, and engineers to move creative work from completion to shipment without issues.
What You'll Do
- Own and evolve the Unity content pipeline for live operations assets, focusing on consistency and speed for 3D props and content updates.
- Implement and validate 3D assets in Unity, including prefabs, materials, shaders, collisions, LODs, lighting setups, and import settings, prioritizing performance and reliability.
- Build and maintain tools, scripts, and automation, primarily using C# and Udon, to reduce manual effort, prevent errors, and make publishing repeatable.
- Create lightweight quality gates for content, such as asset validation checks, naming/structure conventions, performance budgets, and "ready to ship" checklists.
- Debug content and pipeline issues across disciplines, collaborating with engineers on technical constraints and artists on asset readiness.
- Partner with Product Design and Creators to ensure content supports the intended user experience and meets VRChat's quality standards.
- Document workflows to enable faster team scaling as content volume increases.
Who You Are
- You have 3+ years of experience as a Technical Artist, Tools Artist, or a similar role, with a strong portfolio of shipped work.
- You are deeply comfortable in Unity and understand the requirements for shipping performant, real time 3D content.
- You can write scripts (especially C#) and have developed tools or automation that improved team efficiency or reduced production risks.
- You possess a solid understanding of 3D fundamentals, including meshes, materials, textures, lighting, and optimization, and can effectively collaborate with artists on asset quality.
- You think systematically about pipelines, identifying recurring issues and designing preventative guardrails.
- You communicate clearly across various disciplines and excel at transforming ambiguity into reliable workflows.
- You demonstrate a strong ownership mindset, prioritizing shipping results over indefinitely perfecting tools.
Bonus Points (Desired Qualifications)
- Experience building editor tooling, import automation, or asset validation pipelines in Unity.
- Familiarity with the VRChat creator toolchain: Unity, VRChat SDK (Worlds/Avatars), and Creator Companion (VCC/VPM).
- Experience building interactivity in VRChat worlds using Udon / UdonSharp (C# that compiles to Udon).
- Familiarity with common VRChat avatar components like PhysBones/Contacts and performance best practices.
- Experience optimizing content for multiple hardware tiers and platforms (e.g., PC and mobile constraints).
- Experience supporting live operations or high cadence content publishing.
Work Location
This is a remote first role; you can work from anywhere in the world where you do your best thinking. VRChat is a fully distributed company with team members across the globe. While work is primarily asynchronous, some overlap with U.S. time zones is required for team collaboration.
Benefits
- 100% Remote, work from anywhere in the world.
- Health benefits for U.S. and Canadian employees.
- 401K (U.S.) and RRSP (Canada) retirement plans.
- Stock options.
- Unlimited / flexible vacation policy.
- Paid parental leave.
- Generous holiday schedule.
Commitment to Diversity
VRChat is an equal opportunity employer that welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. VRChat fosters a diverse, creative, and collaborative environment where anyone can contribute to ongoing projects or the direction of the roadmap at any time. If you are a passionate team player eager to make an impact on a dynamic team, VRChat would love to hear from you!
