Job Description

As a Fullstack Engineer on the Duo Client SDK team at GitLab, you will build the essential shared foundation for every GitLab Duo client. Currently, the logic powering Duo in editors resides within the GitLab Language Server. We are in the process of extracting this into a robust software development kit SDK. This SDK will consist of well-versioned TypeScript packages that can be utilized by editor extensions, our web-based Duo Chat on GitLab.com, and future external applications.

Your role will involve working with TypeScript across both frontend and backend systems. You will be responsible for designing the SDK's Node.js core and its public application programming interface (API), as well as working within the clients that consume it. The work demands a high level of care regarding interfaces, versioning, and backward compatibility, as numerous other engineers will depend on what you develop. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with senior and staff engineers on design, and you will own the implementation of scoped packages, shipping improvements with minimal guidance while participating in larger architectural discussions.

Examples of Project Contributions

  • The Duo Client SDK, extracting versioned, publishable packages from the GitLab Language Server.
  • The GitLab Language Server, which is being rebuilt on top of the SDK to function as our polyglot surface.
  • Duo Chat on the web, as one of the initial consumers of the SDK.

What You Will Do

  • Develop secure, well-tested, and high-performing TypeScript features to solve technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
  • Ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance, ensuring tests are written with every merge request, and actively contributing to code reviews and design discussions.
  • Extract and publish TypeScript packages from the GitLab Language Server, managing incremental migration of consumers to prevent parallel implementation drift.
  • Design durable public APIs featuring clear interfaces, semantic versioning, changelogs, and established deprecation paths for external users.
  • Build isomorphic core packages that effectively isolate platform-specific behavior within edge adapters.
  • Build and enhance SDK client surfaces, including Vue 3 components for Duo Chat on the web, working closely with product, design, and engineering teams.
  • Strengthen credential handling across various hosts, including bearer tokens, session cookies, and CSRF protection mechanisms.
  • Optimize bundle size, startup cost, and dependency weight for browser consumers, while supporting a Tier 2 on-call rotation for urgent engineering issues.

What You Will Bring

  • Strong proficiency with TypeScript across frontend and backend systems, complemented by experience building and maintaining Node.js services.
  • Familiarity with modern build and packaging tools, such as monorepos, multi-module builds, ECMAScript modules (ESM), and dependency management.
  • Experience with Vue 3 and the Composition API, or comparable component-based frontend experience and a willingness to learn Vue.
  • Experience designing APIs for others, coupled with the ability to clearly articulate alternative approaches.
  • A solid understanding of the distinctions between running code in Node.js versus the browser, and the capability to write cross-compatible code.
  • A security-conscious development mindset, emphasizing careful credential handling and performance optimization.
  • The ability to communicate complex technical problems clearly and concisely in writing, propose iterative solutions, and excel in an agile setting.
  • Self-motivation, excellent organizational skills, and the judgment to seek help when necessary while excelling in a fully remote organization aligned with GitLab's values.
