About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Machine Learning Platform, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and maintaining the foundational systems that enable rapid ML development and deployment at scale. You will solve complex technical challenges related to data pipelines, model training, serving, and lifecycle management. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on Airbnb's product innovation and engineering culture, collaborating with diverse teams and leading critical initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize highly scalable and reliable machine learning infrastructure and services.
• Build tools and frameworks that streamline the entire ML lifecycle, from experimentation to production.
• Collaborate closely with data scientists, ML engineers, and other software engineering teams to understand their needs and deliver innovative solutions.
• Drive architectural decisions and technical roadmap for critical components of the ML platform.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Ensure the performance, security, and maintainability of platform services.

Required Qualifications

• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on distributed systems or machine learning infrastructure.
• Expertise in Python or Java, and experience with other programming languages used in ML.
• Deep understanding of machine learning concepts, algorithms, and best practices.
• Proven experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
• Extensive experience with distributed data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Flink, Kafka).
• Strong command of data structures, algorithms, and system design principles.
• Excellent problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

Bonus Qualifications

• Experience with Kubernetes and Docker for container orchestration.
• Familiarity with ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn.
• Contributions to open source projects in the ML or big data ecosystem.
• Experience with MLOps tools and practices.
