Staff Data Scientist at Automattic
Job Description
Role Summary
Automattic is hiring a Staff Data Scientist to be a technical leader within our fully distributed company. You will lead a centralized data science team that develops and implements advanced data models and analyses, partner with analysts and engineers embedded across business units, and translate data insights into actionable strategies that drive measurable company-wide impact.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of advanced analytical algorithms and statistical models across multiple business units.
- Design and drive company-wide data initiatives that shape analytics and insight strategies to support key decisions.
- Mentor and guide junior data scientists and analysts, raising the bar for technical quality and delivery.
- Collaborate with senior management and cross-functional teams to apply data-driven recommendations and influence strategy.
- Communicate complex data findings and actionable recommendations to non-technical stakeholders to enable data-informed decisions.
Technical Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior data science role at a large, complex technology company.
- Strong expertise in statistical analysis, basic machine learning, and predictive modeling.
- Proficient in Python and familiar with common data science libraries such as pandas and scikit-learn.
- Fluency with distributed SQL query engines like Hive, Presto, or Trino.
- Familiarity with big data technologies such as Hadoop and Spark.
Nice to Have
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a quantitative field such as Computer Science or Statistics.
- Domain-specific analytics experience related to web hosting or WordPress development.
Compensation
Salary range: $200,000 - $275,000 USD. Salary ranges are global and pay is provided in local currency where applicable. Automatticβs pay reflects experience, potential contribution, and impact, and may in some cases exceed the stated range.
