Senior Product Manager, Payments at Automattic

The role

We are actively seeking a senior, hands-on Product Manager to join our WooCommerce Payments team. This individual will take ownership of a specific area within our payment products and partner integrations. You will collaborate closely with the Head of Product and work daily with engineering, design, support, and partnerships teams. This is a deeply executional role, requiring significant time dedicated to writing and refining issues in Linear, triaging bugs and incidents, reviewing and shaping flows in Figma, creating lightweight prototypes, and developing briefs or PRDs as needed. Payments at WooCommerce operate at a substantial scale, processing billions in total payment volume. The quality of this experience directly impacts merchant revenue, shopper conversion, and the overall success of Woo's commercial engine. This position is critical, where reliability, trust, and execution are paramount.

What you'll work on

• Own the product direction and execution for a key part of the payments product area, defining clear goals, priorities, and measurable outcomes.
• Improve merchant and shopper experiences across various touchpoints, including onboarding, checkout, refunds and disputes, payouts, reporting, and overall system reliability.
• Elevate the quality bar by actively reducing failures and friction, aiming to lower support volume, and enhancing product ratings and merchant trust.
• Utilize data, support signals, and merchant feedback to inform product decisions, define success metrics, and make explicit tradeoffs.
• Collaborate closely with priority payment partners, such as Stripe and PayPal, to improve integrations, ship changes, manage dependencies, and resolve issues.
• Ensure stakeholders remain aligned through clear, direct written and verbal communication regarding progress, risks, and decisions.

What we're looking for

• Experience: 7+ years in product roles, with significant Individual Contributor (IC) experience managing complex problem spaces and influencing cross-functional teams through clear communication and precise execution.
• Fintech/Payments Background: 4+ years in payments or fintech, ideally with experience in products operating at scale; experience with large or global launches is a plus.
• Product Judgment: Strong ability to make sound decisions in ambiguous situations, moving forward effectively even without perfect information.
• System Reliability: Comfort working on critical, high-trust systems where reliability is essential and minor changes can have significant impact.
• Technical Collaboration: Ability to work deeply with engineers and designers on complex problems, including understanding technical constraints and tradeoffs.
• Analytical Skills: Strong analytical habits and a practical approach to metrics, dashboards, and instrumentation.
• Communication: Clear written and verbal communication skills, crucial for a distributed, asynchronous work environment.
• Familiarity: Experience with WooCommerce, WordPress, or open-source ecosystems is a plus.

Salary range: $170,000-$240,000 USD. Please note that salary ranges are global, regardless of location, and we pay in local currency. We seek high-caliber candidates whose skills and qualities will bring a net positive to Automattic. Pay will reflect potential contribution and impact, which may sometimes exceed the stated range.
