Join us in co-creating the future by building technology that is transforming software development worldwide.

Role Overview

As a Staff Product Manager for Planning, you will help define the future of software planning as it integrates people and artificial intelligence agents. This role moves beyond traditional agile planning, focusing on rethinking how user intent translates into actionable work, how that work progresses through development, and where human intervention is essential. You will develop a distinct point of view on the future of planning and translate it into concrete product decisions alongside engineering, design, and product leadership. A key part of this role is exploring how planning can connect software delivery directly to company priorities, budgets, and business objectives, rather than assuming decisions are already made. In addition to this strategic effort, you will share ownership of existing planning capabilities with another product manager.

What You Will Do

  • Define a clear direction for planning as software development evolves towards collaboration between people and artificial intelligence agents, guiding the team from open questions to concrete priorities.
  • Shape how users capture intent, break it down into actionable tasks, and determine which tasks can proceed autonomously and which require human input.
  • Evaluate the mechanisms for connecting software delivery directly to company priorities, business goals, and budgets.
  • Co-own planning capabilities, including work items, boards, specifications, and portfolio planning, working to define the scope of ownership with a fellow product manager.
  • Partner with engineering and design to translate the product vision into a roadmap and implement improvements to planning workflows across the GitLab platform.
  • Articulate your recommendations clearly to senior leadership, constructively challenge existing assumptions, and steer the team through necessary directional changes.

What You Will Bring

  • Proven experience leading product strategy and execution for software development tools, developer tools, or planning products, possessing the depth needed to make impactful decisions in a specialized product area.
  • A strong comprehension of software development and DevOps workflows, including how planning decisions influence downstream delivery processes.
  • The capability to form and defend a coherent product point of view even in a volatile, changing market, while remaining receptive to diverse ideas.
  • Excellent communication skills with technical teams and senior executives, including experience constructively challenging leadership decisions and building consensus around a chosen direction.
  • The ability to link a forward-thinking strategy to practical product actions and collaborate effectively across product, engineering, and design functions.

About the Team

The Planning team is responsible for building the foundational capabilities at the beginning of GitLab's software development workflow, such as work items, boards, specifications, and portfolio planning. Because decisions made here dictate how work progresses across the entire platform, the team's scope extends far beyond standalone project management tools. You will collaborate with another product manager and partner closely with engineering and design across this product domain. The division of product ownership is currently being shaped, and you will be instrumental in defining that structure. The hiring manager seeks a perspective that questions established methodologies and encourages constructive challenges to senior leadership, offering influence beyond the immediate product scope. GitLab's mission is to empower everyone to contribute to and co-create the software that drives our world. Our platform unifies software development, security, and operations.
