Chess.com is one of the world's largest gaming sites and the premier platform for playing, learning, and enjoying chess. ChessKid.com, with over 14 million users, is the leading chess site for children and the scholastic extension of Chess.com. Our mission at ChessKid is to expand the game of chess for kids globally, offering a fun, educational, and secure environment for learning and play.
We are a fully remote team of over 700 individuals spanning 60+ countries, dedicated to serving the global chess community. Our goal is to support 165 million players worldwide with superior products, content, and tools. We are a tech, gaming, and content company, driven by passion and commitment to the game. Above all, we value our mission-driven, flat, life-celebrating, and non-corporate culture. We look forward to meeting you and discovering what you can contribute to our team.
About You
You are a skilled product designer with a keen eye for UI and a strong understanding of user experience principles. You prioritize clarity, usability, and exceptional craftsmanship, especially when designing for a young, scholastic audience. You are comfortable tackling diverse design challenges, from new feature development and flow optimizations to creating scalable design patterns. You can refine intricate details while also understanding how your work fits into the broader product vision. You communicate your ideas clearly, collaborate effectively across functions, and take full ownership of your work from initial concept through implementation. You are a team player who leaves ego at the door, and you are enthusiastic about helping people worldwide discover the joy of chess!
What You'll Do
- Design simple, clear, and engaging interactions for both web and mobile platforms, ensuring seamless conversion between mobile and web experiences.
- Lead projects from the initial concept phase through to successful implementation, guaranteeing strong alignment between design and code.
- Work closely with Product, Engineering, and Design teams to clearly define problems and deliver effective solutions.
- Create comprehensive flows, wireframes, and prototypes to explore and articulate design ideas.
- Utilize and contribute to our existing design system to foster scalable and cohesive user experiences across all platforms.
- Present your work and justify design decisions by referencing user needs, product context, and data-driven insights.
- Iterate on designs based on feedback, product goals, user insights, and UX research findings.
- Provide and receive constructive design feedback to continually improve team output.
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of professional experience in product design, specifically on a consumer-facing product or game.
- A compelling portfolio showcasing strong UX thinking, high-quality UI design, and a clear demonstration of your design process.
- Experience working with, contributing to, and scaling a design system, including proficiency with design tokens and pattern libraries.
- B2B or enterprise product design experience, particularly in designing solutions for educators, school districts, or institutional users.
- A solid understanding of typography, layout, visual hierarchy, and interaction design principles.
- Meticulous attention to detail in design elements such as styling inputs, error handling, hover states, and responsive behavior.
- Proficiency with Figma and experience using AI-assisted design tools (e.g., Figma Make, Cursor, Claude Code).
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, essential for thriving in a remote, distributed team environment.
- An intuitive understanding of chess, without necessarily being an expert player.
Bonus Points
- A genuine interest in chess and familiarity with kids' gaming and educational technology (ed-tech) platforms.
- Experience designing for both direct-to-consumer and enterprise software platforms that cater to diverse user needs.
- Experience designing complex or data-rich products.
- Frontend development or design engineering experience (web, iOS, or Android).
- Experience with accessibility and inclusive design practices.
