About the Role: Product Designer, Connect

As a Product Designer within the Connect team, you will be instrumental in designing and enhancing high impact experiences for critical and visible features such as Home, Profile, Notifications, Widgets, Friends, Messages, and Sharing. You will collaborate closely with Product Managers, Engineers, and other Product Designers to create polished and engaging user experiences across web, iOS, and Android for millions of global players.

About You

You are a curious, craft focused Product Designer passionate about transforming product challenges into intuitive and refined interfaces. You are interested in how people connect and committed to designing enjoyable and healthy ways for them to build relationships. You ask thoughtful questions, are open to feedback, and comfortably collaborate from initial problem definition through to implementation. You possess a keen eye for detail, communicate clearly, and proactively work within a highly visible, globally distributed environment.

What You Will Do

  • Design polished, production ready user interfaces for Chess.com applications across web, iOS, and Android.
  • Take ownership of design projects from early problem definition through implementation, ensuring strong design to code alignment throughout the process.
  • Partner with Product Designers, Product Managers, Engineers, and other stakeholders to define requirements, explore design directions, and jointly build effective product experiences.
  • Utilize Chess.com's established design patterns and design system to create responsive, interactive experiences that balance user engagement with simplicity.
  • Develop and iterate on prototypes using agentic tools like Cursor and Claude to efficiently communicate complex ideas and rapidly refine them.
  • Present your work and articulate your design decisions with clear rationale, user insights, and product context.
  • Actively participate in our Slack heavy remote environment, asking questions early, suggesting meaningful improvements, and providing constructive feedback to the design team.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of experience as a Product Designer working on a consumer facing product or game.
  • A portfolio showcasing polished UI design for web and mobile applications, clearly demonstrating your individual contributions.
  • Strong command of UI design fundamentals, including typography, color, layout, visual hierarchy, alignment, contrast, and interactivity.
  • Experience working with an established design system using tokens, components, and design patterns.
  • Familiarity with front end development and the translation of design into code.
  • Experience using AI assisted tools like Cursor and Claude for prototyping and idea iteration.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, collaboration, ownership, and follow through in a remote, globally distributed team.

Preferred Qualifications / Nice to Haves

  • A passion for chess and familiarity with Chess.com and its product experience.
  • Experience designing social features for mobile games or consumer products.
  • Motion design experience, built upon a strong foundation of product and UI design craft.
  • Design engineering or front end development experience on web, iOS, or Android.

About the Opportunity

  • This is a full time position.
  • We are 100% remote (work from anywhere!).
  • This position is open to applicants globally and requires at least 3 hours of overlap with U.S. working hours.
