Product Manager, Growth & Analytics at Automattic
Job Description
We're looking for a Product Manager, Growth & Analytics to join the Beeper team at Automattic. In this crucial role, you will lead product execution for our growth initiatives. You will work directly with Beeper's leadership team to understand what drives user retention, identifies user friction points, and converts users into paying customers, then strategize and implement solutions. Your natural inclination is to thoroughly scope projects before building, meticulously measure results after shipping, and ensure every product initiative concludes with clear insights.
You are not the type of Product Manager who waits for data to be handed to them. Instead, you are proactive, writing your own SQL queries, building custom dashboards, and leveraging these findings to make superior product decisions. This analytical depth is a key differentiator for you.
In this role you will:
- Own the product process for growth: Meticulously manage specifications, user stories, success criteria, and experiment tracking to ensure engineering teams have clear scope and leadership has transparent outcomes.
- Run experiments end-to-end: Manage the full lifecycle of experiments, from hypothesis formation and specification to instrumentation, launch, and detailed results analysis, always closing the loop.
- Build and maintain critical dashboards: Create and maintain the dashboards that leadership relies on for key metrics such as activation, retention, conversion, and engagement.
- Investigate metric shifts: When activation rates drop or retention patterns change, you will be the one to diagnose the root cause and propose actionable solutions.
- Collaborate on validation: Work closely with engineering and support teams to validate identified problems and confirm the effectiveness of shipped solutions.
- Maintain current product documentation: Ensure that feature specifications, release notes, and internal reference documents are always up-to-date, fostering alignment across a distributed team.
Youβll do well in this role if you:
- Have four to six years of experience in product management, growth, or a closely related role where you held ownership of product execution.
- Possess strong SQL skills, including proficiency with Common Table Expressions (CTEs), window functions, cohort analysis, and funnel queries. This is a mandatory requirement.
- Have experience with a cloud data warehouse and are capable of building dashboards and recurring queries.
- Can effectively write specifications that guide engineering development and data summaries that inform leadership decisions.
- Have experience running experiments and understand the critical distinction between merely shipping a feature and truly gaining a valuable learning.
It will help if you:
- Have experience with experiment design and A/B testing frameworks.
- Have worked on a messaging, social, or consumer product.
- Are familiar with subscription or freemium business models.
- Understand basic statistical methods sufficiently to discern meaningful results from mere correlation.
- Are comfortable working with imperfect data when instrumentation may not be perfectly clean.
Bonus points if youβve worked on a distributed team or at a startup where adaptability and self-direction were essential. For this role, a significant overlap with North American time zones (Eastern preferred) is important to facilitate close collaboration with the leadership team. This is a mid-level Individual Contributor (IC) role with high-ownership expectations, as the leadership team will depend on your work to gauge the effectiveness of our strategy.
