Senior Product Manager, Gameplay at Chess
Job Description
About Chess.com
Chess.com is one of the largest gaming sites in the world and the top platform for playing, learning, and enjoying chess. Our team consists of over 600 fully remote people in more than 60 countries, working hard to serve the global chess community. We support more than 250 million chess players worldwide with the best possible product, content, and tools. We are a tech company, a gaming company, and a content company, all driven by passion and commitment to the game. Above all, we value our mission driven, flat, life celebrating, no corporate culture, and we look forward to meeting you and learning more about what you can bring to the team.
About You
You love to play chess and want to help others discover that same passion. You understand the full user journey of being a chess player and recognize that different types of players need different experiences to find joy in the game. You are intimately familiar with the Chess.com experience and want to help further build out the Gameplay ecosystem. You have extensive experience as a product manager shipping delightful consumer facing products. You have worked deeply with design and engineering teams to define what great looks like, and you communicate regularly and successfully to executive stakeholders.
What You Will Do
- Shape the Gameplay roadmap and vision. In close partnership with leadership, shape both the near term roadmap and the long term vision for Gameplay at Chess.com. From live games to daily to bot play, you will own the gameplay experience.
- Bring ideas and sharpen them with the team. Come with your own point of view on what is worth building and why. You do not wait to be told. At the same time, engage seriously with feedback from leadership and peers: internalize it, push back where you disagree, and use it to make the work better. The vision is built together; you are a strong, informed voice in it.
- Operate in public. As a globally remote company spanning many time zones, async Slack communication is how decisions get made. Work out loud in channels: brainstorm openly, pose sharp questions, make decisive small calls with reasoning attached, and be explicit on what is urgent versus not. Engage with depth and without ego, pull the right people in by name to build alignment. Make the most of sync meeting time by taking on the biggest questions.
- Define success and hold the bar for velocity and quality. Frame the problem, partner deeply with engineers and designers, work through what good enough to ship means. Get product scope first time right.
- Use AI to prototype, de risk, and accelerate. Build mocks, test flows, and pressure test ideas yourself. Bring working artifacts into discussions, not just decks. Run AB tests with velocity and build with foresight on configurability.
Required Skills
- 7+ years in product management, with 4+ years shipping consumer facing products at scale. You have shipped consumer facing products to large user bases. You know how to balance a quantitative understanding of funnels, metrics, and experimentation with a qualitative feel for what makes a delightful user experience.
- Excellent product taste, especially in the chess context. You know what feels good and what does not. You know what users with different levels of chess skill and experience are looking to get out of gameplay.
- AI native. You already use AI daily to prototype, explore ideas, and accelerate execution. You build working prototypes as the basis for discussion.
- High velocity communicator. You communicate clearly and concisely at speed and across many projects. You act as the focal point across design, engineering, stakeholders, product peers, and executives, digging into engineering specifics in one thread then zooming out to executive level outcomes in the next.
- US time zone overlap. This role will have most of its key stakeholders across the US. While we are flexible with your location, we require clear and substantial overlap with Eastern US hours.
About the Opportunity
- This is a full time opportunity.
- We are 100% remote (work from anywhere!).
- This role is open to candidates who can work with at least 4 hours of overlap with Eastern US hours.
