About Us: Chess.com

Chess.com is one of the world's largest gaming sites and the premier platform for playing, learning, and enjoying chess. Our team comprises over 600 fully remote individuals spread across 60+ countries, all dedicated to serving the global chess community. Our mission is to support over 200 million chess players worldwide with the best possible products, content, and tools. We are a technology company, a gaming company, and a content company, driven by passion and commitment to the game. Above all, we value our mission-driven, flat, life-celebrating, and non-corporate culture, and we look forward to discovering what you can bring to our team.

About the Role

We are actively hiring multiple Product Designers to join our teams across Chess.com, Chessable, and ChessKid. During the interview process, we will collaborate with you to identify the ideal team and problem space where your impact will be most significant.

About You

You are a skilled product designer with a keen eye for User Interface (UI) and a strong grasp of User Experience (UX) principles. You are passionate about creating clear, usable, and meticulously crafted experiences. You are comfortable tackling diverse design challenges, whether it's developing new features, enhancing existing flows, or evolving scalable design patterns. You can effectively zoom in to refine intricate details and zoom out to comprehend how your work integrates into the broader product vision. You articulate your design thinking clearly, collaborate seamlessly with cross-functional partners, and take full ownership of your projects from inception to completion.

What You’ll Do

  • Work closely with Product, Engineering, and other Design teams to define complex problems and deliver effective design solutions.
  • Design polished interfaces for both web and mobile platforms that are intuitive, consistent, and user-friendly.
  • Utilize and contribute to our established design system to ensure scalable and cohesive user experiences across all products.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes to thoroughly explore and clearly communicate design ideas.
  • Present your work confidently and articulate design decisions, grounding them in user needs, product context, and available data.
  • Take ownership of projects from initial concept through to implementation, ensuring strong alignment between design and code.
  • Iterate on designs based on feedback, evolving product goals, and insights derived from user research.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve the product and drive solutions through to completion.
  • Provide and receive thoughtful design feedback in a constructive and collaborative manner.

What We’re Looking For

  • 2-4 years of experience as a Product Designer working on a consumer-facing product or game.
  • A compelling portfolio showcasing strong UX thinking and high-quality UI design.
  • Solid understanding of typography, layout, hierarchy, and interaction design principles.
  • Experience designing for both web and mobile platforms.
  • Experience working effectively with an established design system.
  • Familiarity with how design concepts translate into code (e.g., HTML/CSS/JS or mobile frameworks).
  • Proficiency with modern design tools, particularly Figma.
  • Experience using AI/ML-assisted tools (e.g., Figma Make, Cursor, Claude Code) for prototyping and iterative design processes, demonstrating strong Prompting skills.
  • Strong communication skills, crucial for collaboration within a remote, distributed team.
  • Clear written communication skills and the ability to thoroughly document design decisions.
  • Demonstrates strong ownership and meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of work.

Bonus Points

  • A genuine interest in chess and familiarity with Chess.com or Chessable platforms.
  • Experience designing complex or data-rich products.
  • Experience contributing to design systems or pattern libraries.
  • Frontend or design engineering experience (web, iOS, or Android).
  • Experience with accessibility and inclusive design practices.
