Job Overview
This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for an individual who excels at the intersection of strategy and execution. You will take full ownership of the People function, reporting directly to the CEO, and serving as VRChat's most senior People leader. We are seeking a builder - someone who not only sets direction but also actively executes, moves quickly, and explores how artificial intelligence can revolutionize People team operations. You will lead a compact, high-impact People team, acting as a player-coach who both devises strategy and actively participates in its implementation.
Job & Team Impact
As the Director of People, you will be instrumental in shaping how VRChat attracts, develops, and retains the talent essential to our mission. You will serve as a trusted partner to the CEO and senior leadership, a mentor to managers, and a staunch advocate for the people and unique culture that define VRChat.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Own the complete People function, encompassing People Operations, Talent & Recruiting, Performance & Growth, Compensation Strategy, Culture & Engagement, and Manager Enablement.
- Act as a strategic business partner to the CEO and senior leadership team, ensuring People strategy aligns with business goals and providing talent insights that link people metrics to tangible outcomes.
- Translate engagement, attrition, and performance data into proactive, executive-level narratives and actionable recommendations.
- Lead and develop a small, high-impact People team, ensuring they possess the necessary support, clarity, and tools to perform at their best.
- Oversee the recruiting strategy, maintaining a consistent focus on quality of hire and long-term organizational fit. Act as the key closer for senior and challenging-to-fill roles.
- Evolve our performance frameworks to match our dynamic work environment, equipping managers with practical tools that foster genuine accountability.
- Define VRChat's compensation philosophy, including leveling, equity principles, and how these are communicated to both candidates and current employees.
- Integrate AI into People Operations by identifying and implementing solutions that significantly reduce manual workload and enhance the overall employee experience.
- Sustain and further develop VRChat's inclusive, remote-first culture across a globally distributed and diverse workforce.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
- 8-12 years of experience in People/HR, with demonstrated ownership of a full People function or a significant pillar, including budget accountability and experience partnering with leadership.
- A proven track record of building and successfully executing people programs with measurable impact.
- Ability to work in a fast and iterative manner, delivering a v1 to stakeholders within days, not weeks, and continuously improving from there.
- Extensive experience supporting fully remote, globally distributed teams.
- Proven ability to scale a People function within a company size ranging from 100 to 500 employees.
- AI-forward mindset: actively uses AI in current People work and can identify, evaluate, and implement solutions that decrease manual workload.
- Ability to quickly earn trust and influence at all organizational levels through expertise and sound judgment.
- Genuine alignment with our work philosophy: bold enough to experiment, willing to engage in constructive debate, fully committed once decisions are made, collaborative by default, and driven by outcomes rather than activity.
- Empathetic yet decisive, comfortable navigating ambiguity and making pragmatic decisions with incomplete information.
- Capable of operating at the executive level, comfortable presenting people data and insights to leadership and board members.
- Experience managing globally distributed teams across various employment models and regions.

- Background in gaming, social platforms, or community-driven products; ideally with an understanding that the product itself is the community.
- A genuine track record of fostering a sense of belonging across a diverse, global workforce.
- Personal experience within VRChat, or a strong curiosity about social VR and its implications for human connection.
