As a Staff Design Researcher on the Platform Design and Research team within the Platform group, you will be responsible for establishing the research vision and best practices across the systems, tools, and infrastructure that power Coinbase. This crucial team supports foundational areas such as Identity, Payments, Developer Experience, Financial Infrastructure, Compliance, and others.

Your role involves defining how Platform understands its customers. You will combine deep, insightful research with hands-on design skills to transform ambiguous problems into clear product opportunities, high-quality deliverables, and successfully shipped solutions.

What You Will Do

• Define and own the research practice for Platform, setting the vision, strategy, prioritization, and engagement models to connect customer insights with product and design decisions across the entire organization.
• Manage and run Platform's recurring internal CSAT program, which includes designing surveys, setting cadence, analyzing results, and reporting findings to leadership to uncover actionable opportunities regarding how internal teams use Platform tools.
• Conduct and lead generative, evaluative, and mixed-methods research involving engineers, technical leads, product managers, and end customers, focusing on elevating existing methodologies and identifying innovative approaches to solve complex research challenges across Identity, Payments, Developer Experience, internal tooling, and compliance.
• Drive processes and execution that lead to high-quality design outputs, such as polished prototypes, detailed interaction flows, and compelling visual storytelling that sets the standard for your product area.
• Act as a cross-functional leader, partnering with senior product, design, and engineering leaders during all phases of strategy planning. You will influence roadmaps and investment decisions using evidence from research and well-constructed design presentations.
• Drive enhancements in design consistency and integrity within your product area, contributing to the existing design systems and developing new solutions as needed. You will also build research repositories and frameworks to scale research impact across the broader Design and Research organization.
• Coach and mentor designers and product partners concerning both research rigor and design craft, thereby raising the quality bar and expanding the capacity of the core team.

Required Skills and Experience

• Possess 10 or more years of professional experience in user research and product design, including setting research visions and leading research for complex, technical, or platform-scale products and systems.
• Demonstrate the ability to operate at a strategic level, shaping product direction and influencing senior cross-functional and executive stakeholders through research-driven insights and persuasive design presentations.
• Must have expert level proficiency in design and prototyping tools like Figma or equivalent, capable of producing polished, high-quality deliverables that communicate the customer experience and product direction to leadership.
• Possess a strong command of qualitative research methods, with proven judgment regarding which methods suit specific questions, and the ability to advance methodologies and introduce new ways to solve ambiguous problems.
• Have a track record of building research practices, operating models, or measurement programs, such as recurring CSAT or voice-of-customer programs, that scaled impact beyond a single team, and have experience driving design system adoption and contribution across a product area.
• Must utilize generative AI responsibly, ensuring human oversight is maintained to produce business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Compensation and Benefits

Pay Transparency Notice: Base salary varies based on location. Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility, as well as various benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k)).

Annual Base Salary Range (Excluding Equity and Bonus): $216,790 to $228,200 USD
