Senior Quality Platform Engineer at Circle
Job Description
About Us
Circle is building the worldβs leading all-in-one platform for online communities. We empower creators, coaches, educators, and businesses to unite their audience with engaging discussions, live streams, events, chat, courses, and payments - all in one cohesive platform, under their own brand. We are proud to be a fully remote company with approximately 200 (and growing!) team members from over 30 countries globally. We actively seek exceptional individuals worldwide, providing them with the environment and resources to do the best work of their lives, and in turn, create a meaningful impact in their own lives. We focus on outcomes rather than tracking hours, and we maintain high expectations for performance. Our collaborative approach spans across time zones, is highly asynchronous, and emphasizes thorough documentation. Twice a year, our entire company gathers in inspiring locations around the world for fully paid offsites, with previous destinations including Turkey, Portugal, Mexico, Thailand, Colombia, Italy, and Ireland. Explore our Careers page for more insights into working at Circle.
About the Role
At Circle, we are evolving beyond traditional testing; quality is not merely a gate, but a fundamental platform. As a Senior Quality Platform Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain the internal tooling, automation, workflows, and quality infrastructure that enable teams to ship faster, safer, and with increased confidence. This role uniquely blends software engineering, developer experience, and quality strategy. You will not solely write tests; instead, you will architect systems that ensure quality is scalable, observable, measurable, and integrated into every stage of the development process. If you are passionate about empowering teams, reducing friction, and approaching quality as a product, this role is ideal for you.
What you'll be doing
Platform & Tooling
- Develop and maintain the Quality Platform, including frameworks, libraries, pipelines, and integrations that facilitate high-quality delivery.
- Build reusable, language-agnostic automation libraries and internal SDKs.
- Own CI/CD quality gates, test orchestration, and intelligent execution logic (e.g., test selection, caching, parallelization).
- Implement and maintain recording/playback tools, contract testing, visual regression engines, and observability hooks.
- Drive AI & Innovation initiatives for Quality Engineering workflows.
Developer Experience
- Improve feedback loops across local development, Pull Requests (PRs), staging environments, and production.
- Create self-service tooling that enables engineers to generate tests, diagnose failures, and validate changes rapidly.
- Embed quality signals directly into engineering workflows (e.g., risk scoring, flakiness insights, test coverage intelligence).
Reliability & Quality Intelligence
- Build systems that transform raw quality data into actionable insights.
- Own and maintain metrics dashboards for flakiness, failure cause classification, performance trends, and release confidence.
- Collaborate with our Infrastructure team to implement resilience tests (e.g., chaos engineering, reliability gates, Service Level Indicators/Service Level Objectives - SLIs/SLOs).
Guardrails & Governance
- Define and codify quality standards that scale across multiple teams (e.g., naming conventions, folder structure, selector strategies, logging).
- Automate these rules into guardrails rather than relying solely on documentation.
- Work closely with our Infrastructure team to ensure secure automation practices, secrets handling, and permissions management.
Paved Roads
- Create "golden paths" for developers, including out-of-the-box test setups, generated mocks & fixtures, recommended patterns and linting rules, and fully managed test environments.
What Success Looks Like
- Developers spend more time building features and less time troubleshooting tests.
- Release confidence consistently increases while cycle time decreases.
- Test flakiness is effectively tracked, understood, and eliminated at its root cause.
- Teams are able to self-serve 90% of their testing and quality workflows.
- Quality signals become central to all engineering decisions.
- The organization views Quality as a platform that enables innovation, not just a department.
What you'll need to be successful
- Strong alignment with our values. Please review our career page for more on our values.
- You are proficient in English (spoken, written, and reading) at a CEFR Level C2 / ILR Level 5.
Technical
- Strong experience in at least one modern testing framework (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Jest, JUnit).
- Solid software engineering background (TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, Python, or similar).
- Familiarity with Ruby (we use this in our backend systems).
- Strong experience with Ruby to build or interact with backend services.
- Experience building internal tooling, utilities, or engineering platforms.
- Deep understanding of CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) practices and tools (e.g., Buildkite, GitHub Actions, GitLab, CircleCI).
- Knowledge of cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Strong understanding of architectural patterns.
- Experience with quality telemetry, observability, or monitoring systems.
- Experience with Performance and Load testing and related tooling.
Quality Engineering Mindset
- Proficiency in shift-left and shift-right testing practices.
- Testability-first thinking.
- Ability to design high-leverage systems rather than isolated tests.
- Strong understanding of resilience and reliability engineering principles.
Who You Are
- You think like a platform builder, aiming to solve problems once so others don't have to.
- You enjoy simplifying complex systems.
- You care deeply about engineering productivity and operational excellence.
- You can seamlessly transition between big-picture strategy and deep technical execution.
- You are collaborative, curious, and passionate about elevating quality across an organization.
Bonus Points
- Experience with AI-assisted testing tools or test generation frameworks.
- Knowledge of VCR/web mocking proxies, contract testing, and API schema validation.
- Exposure to static analysis tools and code quality scanners.
- Experience with platform engineering in any form (Developer Experience, Site Reliability Engineering, Internal Platforms).
Compensation & Benefits
The cash compensation range shown is a starting point, between $120,000 - $130,000 USD per year. In addition to equity, benefits, and perks, your cash compensation is subject to an annual review and increase once per year.

- Parental leave for parents expanding their family or just starting one.
- Home office stipend to help you get setup and running.
- Learning & development stipend to help you level up your professional skills.
- Annual bonus potential for roles that don't already receive variable income or commission.
- Company retreats: Twice a year, the Circle team gathers for a fully paid company retreat in incredible places around the world, with past retreats in Colombia, Portugal, and Mexico. More are planned on the horizon.
