Job Description

About Alpaca

Alpaca is a US-headquartered, developer-first broker-dealer and brokerage infrastructure provider for stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, fixed income, and more. Backed by Series C funding and over $170M in total investment, Alpaca powers hundreds of financial institutions and millions of brokerage accounts with institutional-grade APIs. Our global, distributed team builds open, developer-friendly infrastructure that enables companies to build modern financial products.

Your Role

As Senior Product Manager, API, you will own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for Alpaca’s core Broker, Trading, and Market Data APIs. You will act as the voice of the developer and institutional customer, defining standards for authentication, error handling, versioning, rate limiting, and deprecation. You will collaborate closely with engineering, security, marketing, and business teams to design, build, and launch API products that are scalable, reliable, and easy to adopt.

What You Will Do

  • Define product vision and roadmap for core API surfaces including broker, trading, and market data APIs.
  • Set and enforce API standards for authentication and authorization (OAuth, API keys), error handling, rate limiting, idempotency, versioning, and deprecation strategy.
  • Own API specifications and documentation by authoring PRDs, user stories, and API specs with OpenAPI and AsyncAPI formats, and by reviewing changelogs and docs prior to release.
  • Drive developer experience by becoming an expert on developer needs, designing intuitive APIs, and ensuring best-in-class docs and developer flows that reduce time-to-value.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, security, developer relations, and marketing to deliver launches, SDKs, and go-to-market programs that drive adoption.
  • Define metrics and SLOs to measure API performance, reliability, adoption, and developer satisfaction, and use data to inform roadmap decisions.
  • Evangelize the product internally and externally as the primary API product owner, helping prioritize changes and tradeoffs to meet customer and business needs.

Who You Are - Must-Haves

  • At least 5 years of product management experience, with substantial focus on API products, developer platforms, or platforms used by technical customers.
  • Proven ability to understand complex technical concepts and to partner closely with engineering on architecture, design, and tradeoffs.
  • Strong experience with RESTful API design principles and hands-on experience working with OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, or similar API specification formats.
  • Familiarity with API usage patterns and asynchronous flows such as evented or streaming APIs (gRPC, WebSockets, Server Sent Events).
  • Deep understanding of authentication and authorization models such as OAuth and API keys.
  • Data-driven mindset with experience using analytics to measure product performance and to prioritize roadmap items.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a track record of leading cross-functional teams.
  • Passion for financial markets and a desire to build products that empower developers to build financial applications.
  • Experience in agile development environments.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Background in engineering or prior work building developer platforms.
  • Direct fintech or brokerage experience, including familiarity with trading APIs across asset classes such as stocks, options, or crypto.
  • Experience contributing to or managing open-source projects.
  • Knowledge of institutional trading workflows and compliance considerations.

How We Take Care of You

  • Competitive salary and stock options.
  • Health benefits.
  • New hire home-office setup allowance and ongoing monthly stipend.
