Job Overview

As a Senior Data Scientist on VRChat’s Data Team, you will play a pivotal role in guiding strategic product decisions and advancing our product roadmap across key verticals including growth, user experience, creator engagement, and virtual economy. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in a technical field, extensive experience working with large production datasets, and a proven track record of delivering impactful data products within a fast-paced team. This position is full-time and entirely remote.

What You’ll Do

• Partner with cross-functional teams to define high-impact product questions, establish clear success metrics, and develop robust decision frameworks.
• Analyze diverse data points, including user behavior, creator activity, content ecosystems, retention rates, growth patterns, monetization strategies, and social dynamics, to identify both opportunities and potential risks.
• Design and rigorously analyze experiments, including A/B tests and other causal measurement approaches, to effectively evaluate new product launches, marketing campaigns, and strategic initiatives.
• Define and continuously improve core product metrics, interactive dashboards, diagnostic views, and recurring reports that empower teams to understand the 'what' and 'why' behind changes.
• Develop durable analytical assets such as reusable notebooks, optimized data marts, precise metric definitions, self-serve dashboards, and standardized analysis templates.
• Utilize AI-assisted and agentic workflows to accelerate data analysis, automate repetitive investigations, enhance documentation, and construct lightweight internal tools for common analytical inquiries.
• Collaborate closely with Data Engineering and product teams to enhance data quality, improve instrumentation, refine data modeling, and establish reliable source-of-truth definitions.
• Communicate complex findings clearly and persuasively to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior stakeholders, thereby influencing product decisions through evidence-based insights and expert judgment.

What We’re Looking For

• 5+ years of experience in data science, product analytics, data analytics, quantitative analysis, or a closely related analytical role.
• Expert proficiency in SQL and strong command of Python or R for advanced analysis, experimentation design, statistical modeling, automation of workflows, and creation of reproducible analytical assets.
• Strong product sense, with demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous product or business challenges into structured analyses, actionable metrics, well-designed experiments, and clear recommendations.
• Extensive experience in designing, analyzing, and accurately interpreting experiments, including A/B tests, monitoring of guardrail metrics, and an understanding of common statistical pitfalls.
• Proven experience in building dashboards, developing reporting systems, creating reusable analyses, or crafting data products that enable stakeholders to self-serve insights and make informed decisions.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted analytical workflows, such as leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) or AI agents for code generation, exploratory data analysis, documentation, quality assurance, summarization, or workflow automation.
• Strong judgment regarding data quality, statistical validity, reproducibility, data privacy, and a clear understanding of the limitations inherent in AI-generated analysis.
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to articulate complex findings clearly and influence senior audiences effectively.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical, quantitative, or data-related field, or equivalent practical work experience.

Bonus Points

• Experience at a social media, gaming, creator economy, marketplace, consumer subscription, or User-Generated Content (UGC) platform company.
• Experience with social graphs, creator ecosystems, virtual economies, recommendation systems, lifecycle analytics, customer retention, churn prediction, pricing strategies, trust & safety mechanisms, or community health metrics.
• Experience in building AI-powered internal tools, analytical agents, natural-language data interfaces, automated reporting systems, or self-service insight platforms.
• Proficiency with data tools such as dbt, Snowflake, BigQuery, Tableau, Amplitude, Hex, Mode, Jupyter, Streamlit, Airflow, Dagster, or similar platforms.
• Experience mentoring other data scientists, analysts, or cross-functional partners.
