About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer on Camunda's new Data Streaming team, you will be instrumental in building a foundational architectural component that will transform how customers and internal products access process data. Currently, customers lack a first class method to stream their process data from Camunda into their own systems. You will join a greenfield team responsible for developing a durable, continuously written streaming layer that entirely decouples data consumption from the live engine. This small team will not only focus on the streaming architecture itself but also on the analytics product and other data consumers built upon it, offering significant influence over the architecture and team scope as it matures. You will play a crucial role in shaping this architecture within an exciting and fast paced domain. You will collaborate closely with peers to deliver and directly influence the evolution of our data streaming architecture to meet customer needs. Key Responsibilities

• Design and build core streaming infrastructure to decouple process data access from the live execution engine, utilizing durable, low cost storage.
• Develop customer facing data streaming capabilities, including supported integrations with systems like Kafka, to enable reliable process data transfer to customer tools.
• Contribute to rebuilding how Camunda's analytics product consumes and serves process data at scale, moving it off the engine's critical path.
• Make foundational architecture decisions within a small, high ownership team, focusing on guaranteeing consistency and durability across a distributed streaming pipeline.
• Participate in L3 support and on call rotations, partnering with Support and SRE to investigate data layer production issues and integrate learnings back into the product.

Required Skills & Experience

• Ability and/or willingness to use Camunda products.
• 7+ years of experience as a backend engineer, with a strong focus on Java, distributed systems, or data intensive systems.
• Hands on experience with object storage systems (S3/GCS/Azure or similar) and building reliable, idempotent upload/commit protocols.
• Experience with Kafka or a similar streaming/event log system.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, even without core execution engine experience.
• Demonstrated track record of driving technical initiatives through genuine ambiguity in systems under design, not just extending established ones.
• Proven experience leading medium to large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end to end, from solution design and project planning to coordinating across teams and driving predictable delivery.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote first environment, translating requirements into actionable technical work with Product, and providing clear, direct feedback in code reviews.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience with Apache Iceberg, Parquet, or general lakehouse/data lake architectures.
• Experience with embedded state stores (RocksDB or similar) for projection/checkpointing workloads.
• Experience with stream processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Flink), particularly stateful processing with local state backends and checkpointing.
• Familiarity with object storage native streaming architectures (e.g., systems like WarpStream) is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Camunda offers competitive, fair, and transparent compensation. Salary ranges are location based, with Standard and Major markets (global tech hubs) reflecting local competition. Final offers depend on skills, experience, and location, and we typically hire in the first half of the range to allow room for growth.

Example Annual Total Target Cash (base salary + 100% variable target, where applicable):

• United States: $143,800.00 to $231,900.00
• United Kingdom: £90,300.00 to £148,500.00
• Singapore: S$178,600.00 to S$267,900.00
• Canada: C$152,700.00 to C$251,200.00
