Job Description

Role Overview

Are you ready to make the most impactful contribution of your career? At Coinbase, we are deeply committed to increasing economic freedom. We maintain high standards and operate in an intense environment, and we embrace that intensity. If you are eager to build the future of finance alongside individuals who never settle for merely good enough, this role is for you. Coinbase operates as a remote-first, but not remote-only company, requiring attendance for intense in-person working sessions called surges every quarter.

This position is within the Finance department, specifically embedded inside the Office of the CTO. You will function as a founding engineer within Finance, sitting at the intersection of technology and finance. Your core mission will be to identify high-value automation opportunities, rapidly develop prototypes using Coinbase's existing AI platform, and successfully implement AI tooling across the FP&A and Treasury organization.

What You Will Do

  • Embed directly with FP&A and Treasury leadership to pinpoint automation opportunities that offer the greatest business leverage. This requires developing a ground-level understanding of complex financial workflows such as period-end close, variance analysis, and liquidity stress-testing before writing code.
  • Prototype quickly and pragmatically, utilizing Coinbase's existing AI platform as the primary foundation before suggesting entirely new builds.
  • Own the automation roadmap for Finance by partnering with the VP of FP&A & Treasury. This involves translating intricate financial processes - including budgeting cycles, GL reconciliation, multi-entity consolidation, and regulatory filing drafts - into clear engineering requirements and constraints for technical stakeholders.
  • Define the build-versus-buy strategy for Finance tooling, assessing what should be built internally, adopted from partner teams, procured from external vendors, or retired.
  • Ensure every automated financial output is fully traceable, reviewable, and defensible to auditors, making SOX compliance, segregation of duties, and human-in-the-loop controls a primary design consideration.
  • Drive the adoption of new tools through brown-bag sessions, prototype demonstrations, and feedback loops, ensuring that FP&A and Treasury teams actively use the new solutions.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record of shipping production systems in demanding, stakeholder-heavy settings. Greenfield development experience is a significant advantage.
  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise in deploying LLM based applications, encompassing prompt engineering, establishing evaluation frameworks, creating hallucination guardrails, and implementing human-in-the-loop design for sensitive financial outputs.
  • A proven capacity to integrate with non-technical subject matter experts, quickly absorb complex workflows, and translate those concepts into precise engineering specifications.
  • Familiarity with core financial system concepts such as ERP data flows (e.g., NetSuite, Workday, Anaplan), reconciliation logic, trial balances, and environments governed by SOX compliance.
  • Familiarity with multi-agent orchestration concepts, including how agent systems manage handoffs, escalations, and maintain auditability.
  • Prior experience in Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or a similar embedded technical advisory role, ideally within fintech, finance-tech, or enterprise automation domains.
  • Responsible use of generative AI, ensuring human oversight is maintained to deliver business ready outputs and achieve measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
