Engineering Manager, Switchboard Remote at GitLab
Job Description
GitLab, the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Switchboard team. GitLab empowers organizations to enhance developer productivity, boost operational efficiency, mitigate security and compliance risks, and accelerate digital transformation. With over 50 million registered users, GitLab is trusted by more than 50% of the Fortune 100 to deliver superior, secure software at speed. Our high-performance culture embraces AI as a core productivity multiplier, expecting all team members to integrate AI into their daily workflows for maximum impact.
The Role
As the Engineering Manager for the Switchboard team, you will lead the team responsible for the Tenant management product within GitLab Dedicated environments. This product is end-to-end and involves a diverse group of Frontend, Backend, and Reliability engineers. Your role is to set a clear direction for how the team develops and evolves this critical product, while maintaining strong coordination with the assigned Product Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the fullstack Switchboard team accountable for the customer-facing control panel of GitLab Dedicated, defining clear delivery and evolution strategies.
- Recruit and mentor a high-performing team capable of producing quality results with speed.
- Act as the final decision maker and blocker remover for the team in partnership with Technical Team Leads, providing necessary technical direction.
- Collaborate closely with Product and Design teams on the customer-facing control panel, including reviewing wireframes and UI direction for external users.
- Own the planning process with the Product Manager, managing priorities, dependencies, and quarterly delivery epics.
- Ensure fast, high quality, and cross-functional execution across frontend, backend, UX, product, and technical writing functions.
- Drive continuous improvements in quality, security, and performance across the product suite.
- Support the team's core mission: enabling GitLab Dedicated customers to manage their tenant environments while reducing manual operations on our large scale Dedicated fleet.
What We Require From You
We seek a technical engineering manager with the capability to lead teams building and operating large-scale distributed systems. The ideal candidate balances deep technical expertise with robust operational instincts and a genuine passion for cultivating high-performing teams.
- Proven ability to build and own large-scale distributed services, possessing the technical depth to influence architecture and guide the team's technical strategy.
- Experience with fleet management products, specifically involving Terraform, Kubernetes, AWS, and automated provisioning across 20 or more clusters.
- A track record of driving operational excellence, including owning services that meet four-nines (99.99%) SLO standards and understanding what is necessary to maintain them.
- Experience leveraging AI tooling to increase team productivity, backed by real lessons learned from both successes and challenges.
- A history of constructing and managing highly accountable, high-performing team cultures, including the difficult decisions of managing out when required.
- Comfort in driving complex projects to successful completion without relying on a dedicated Technical Program Manager (TPM).
- Expertise in leading both distributed and remote teams effectively.
