We are looking for a driven professional to join our Compliance Technology team, which is responsible for building and operating the critical data and detection capabilities that allow Coinbase to meet global BSA/AML and related regulatory obligations at scale.

This role requires technical leadership to ensure our monitoring and investigative controls, such as Transaction Monitoring, EDD/KYC, and Screening, are effective, measurable, and auditable. As part of a remote-first culture, you will collaborate closely with Compliance, Product, and Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for compliance data and control systems within your domain, leading the design, implementation, and operation of large-scale solutions for global compliance.
• Define and deliver multi-year technical roadmaps that align with regulatory needs, business growth, and operational scalability, translating long term priorities into measurable quarterly outcomes.
• Independently analyze complex technical problems, evaluate solutions, and determine approaches that balance control effectiveness, data quality, reliability, customer experience, and operational cost.
• Lead complex, cross-functional initiatives involving Product, Engineering, Compliance, and Operations. You must build alignment on technical approaches and drive delivery without relying on direct reporting authority.
• Act as a technical expert whose judgment shapes critical architectural decisions across your team and partners. Improve engineering quality through hands on development, design reviews, and technical documentation.
• Partner with Compliance and control owners to convert regulatory and policy requirements into testable technical controls, ensuring clear acceptance criteria, traceable data, and evidence of control effectiveness.
• Own the operational health of your systems, managing monitoring, incident response, and remediation. Proactively detect data quality issues and drive improvements to reduce recurrence.
• Analyze detection outputs and control performance trends to enhance signal quality and operational efficiency, minimizing noise while validating that changes maintain detection sensitivity.
• Collaborate with Machine Learning/AI and Platform teams to elevate compliance capabilities, establishing clear evaluation criteria and monitoring production performance.
• Mentor analytics and data practitioners through technical guidance, reviews, and knowledge sharing, upholding Coinbase’s core values.

Required Skills & Experience

• A minimum of 10 years of experience developing data intensive systems, including significant technical leadership in compliance data and control systems.
• Deep expertise in compliance data systems, serving as a trusted technical resource whose judgment shapes architecture and resolves critical cross functional issues.
• Proven success leading complex technical initiatives independently from problem definition and design through implementation and production operation.
• Experience building scalable, reliable data pipelines, data models, and multi tenant compliance controls or systems, emphasizing data quality, testing, and auditability.
• Demonstrated ability to influence technical decisions and align stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Compliance, and Operations despite lacking formal authority.
• Strong technical acumen in balancing regulatory demands and control requirements against system reliability, user experience, delivery constraints, and operational efficiency.
• Experience assessing detection or control performance, investigating degradation, and validating enhancements to signal quality and effectiveness.
• Strong hands on proficiency in implementation, code and design review, technical writing, production troubleshooting, and incident leadership.
• Capacity to connect long term technical vision with immediate execution, independently navigating ambiguity.
• Clear communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex technical and compliance issues, present trade offs, and build consensus among technical and non technical groups.
• Sound judgment when utilizing AI tools, specifically reviewing outputs and safeguarding sensitive data.
• A genuine passion for building an open financial system that connects the world.

Compensation and Logistics

Pay Transparency: Depending on your work location, the target annual base salary ranges from $230,265 to $270,900 USD. Total compensation may also include bonus eligibility and comprehensive benefits.
