About the Role
Camunda is seeking a Senior Employment Counsel to provide critical legal support to its People team. This role will be the primary point of contact for employment matters, managing key legal and HR vendor relationships, and reducing reliance on external counsel. This hands-on, embedded position is ideal for an attorney who thrives as a trusted business partner, offering practical, business-pragmatic guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the first line of support for all employment legal questions, resolving most matters directly without external counsel.
- Partner closely with People Business Partners to advise on employee relations, performance management, terminations, leaves of absence, and reasonable accommodations. Directly manage severe employee relations cases.
- Oversee the relationship with Remote.com, including contract terms, service levels, escalations, and ongoing performance.
- Manage external legal counsel relationships, including evaluating scope, spend, and engagement.
- Collaborate with Legal and Finance on cross-functional projects involving employment law, compliance, or spend management.
- Ensure comprehensive compliance with employment law across all jurisdictions where Camunda operates, with a particular focus and depth in the DACH region. Identify opportunities to mitigate risk and balance legal risk with business value.
- Research, identify, and adopt AI tools to enhance the speed and effectiveness of legal support for the People team.
- Track and actively reduce external counsel spend against established baselines.
Qualifications and Experience
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or an equivalent law degree, with active bar admission in at least one jurisdiction.
- A minimum of 8 years of dedicated employment law experience, including substantial in-house experience at a global company operating in multiple jurisdictions.
- Deep, current knowledge of DACH employment law (including works councils, termination protections, and co-determination principles), along with broad experience across other global jurisdictions.
- Proven experience in managing outside counsel and HR vendor relationships, including Employer of Record (EOR) platforms like Remote or similar providers.
- A demonstrated ability to advise HR and People teams directly, translating complex legal risks into clear, practical, and business-focused guidance.
- Strong independent judgment and the confidence to make autonomous decisions without constant escalation to outside counsel.
- Experience leveraging AI tools to optimize legal or compliance workflows.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of building trust across People, Legal, and Finance departments.
