Job Description

GitLab is seeking dedicated Site Reliability Engineers to ensure our user-facing services and production systems operate at peak reliability and scale. This is a single application for opportunities across various Infrastructure Platforms teams, ranging from Intermediate through Senior Staff levels. While we evaluate skills holistically, candidates will be matched to the best fit based on their experience.

The core mission of SREs is to combine software engineering prowess with operational excellence, leveraging automation and sound engineering principles to build, operate, and evolve our critical production infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of user-facing services and production systems.
  • Developing automation and tooling to significantly reduce toil and replace manual tasks with repeatable, infrastructure-as-code workflows.
  • Operating and troubleshooting production systems on Kubernetes, managing deployments, rollouts, and scaling operations.
  • Writing and maintaining infrastructure as code, ensuring safe change management through CI/CD and GitOps practices.
  • Participating actively in on-call rotations, triaging alerts, and improving existing runbooks and processes.
  • Contributing to the observability stack by utilizing metrics, logs, and SLOs to detect potential issues before they become full outages.
  • Engaging in incident response and conducting thorough post-incident reviews to drive process and automation improvements.
  • Documenting all runbooks, architecture decisions, and reviews to create scalable, repeatable practices.

What You Will Bring

We are looking for engineers who possess strong technical fundamentals, a growth mindset, and the capacity to learn quickly. Specific requirements include:

  • Experience ensuring the reliability of production systems, merging an operations perspective with strong software engineering skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in building new infrastructure tooling and automation, moving beyond just configuring existing tools. Examples include creating Terraform modules, Kubernetes operators, or bespoke production automation services.
  • A solid ability to read, debug, and reason through code. Experience in Go or Ruby is highly valued.
  • Deep experience with infrastructure as code, particularly within the Kubernetes ecosystem, commensurate with your experience level.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider, specifically GCP or AWS.
  • Familiarity with observability practices, including metrics, logging, alerting, and the application of SLO/SLI data to guide operational decisions.
  • Comfort and experience participating in on-call rotation and incident response, maintaining a structured approach to troubleshooting under pressure.
  • Strong written communication skills, enabling effective operation as a manager-of-one in an asynchronous, distributed environment.
  • A proven track record of using automation and incorporating AI to decrease toil and enhance team efficiency.
  • Alignment with GitLab's core values and commitment to upholding them.

Note on Levels: Intermediate SREs deliver meaningful reliability improvements in defined areas. Senior SREs own complex reliability work end to end. Staff engineers shape reliability across multiple teams by solving systemic problems. Senior Staff set technical direction across broader infrastructure areas and influence organizational reliability strategy.
