Paralegal at Atticus
Job Description
Atticus is tackling a critical social issue: millions of Americans are struggling to access necessary aid from the legal system or government. Our mission is to remove barriers between people in crisis and the life-changing assistance they deserve. Over the last six years, we have become a leading platform connecting individuals with disabilities to government benefits, and we assist accident and violence victims in securing compensation. We have helped hundreds of thousands access over $10 billion in aid and have garnered over 20,000 five-star reviews, supported by significant investment from top venture capital firms.
The Opportunity: Paralegal
Each day, thousands seek our help navigating the intimidating processes of obtaining disability benefits or insurance compensation. As a Paralegal at Atticus, your role goes beyond traditional paralegal duties. It blends core responsibilities like building client relationships, managing caseloads, and collaborating on case strategy with tasks unique to a fast growing tech company. You might assist Marketing in sourcing testimonial clients or use new tools being tested by Product.
A Typical Week May Include:
- Interviewing clients, analyzing medical records, and drafting persuasive memos to argue for SSA disability consideration.
- Collaborating with a client's local representative to track down missing paperwork required by the SSA.
- Taking ownership of an inefficient team workflow (e.g., case update processing), scoping an improvement, gaining team consensus, and implementing the fix.
This is a unique chance to join a Series C startup and make a meaningful social impact. This role is designed to support your career goals, whether that is advancing within Atticus' Representation Lab team or preparing for law or business school (we offer application assistance and write strong recommendations).
Qualifications Required
- Professional experience in a role requiring substantial client-facing work (such as a case manager) or lawyer-facing work (such as a paralegal).
- Being a resourceful team player, ready to thrive in a scrappy startup environment where quick learning and hands on work are expected.
- Comfortable navigating various interpersonal conversations; being empathetic and kind when dealing with individuals in crisis, while remaining thoughtful and organized when interacting with attorneys.
- Demonstrating a strong commitment to social good and helping people.
Bonus / Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Professional experience assisting others in applying for government benefits.
- Experience working within a startup or another fast-paced, agile setting.
We are dedicated to building a diverse team and encourage applications from underrepresented backgrounds in tech.
Compensation and Benefits
Joining Atticus means becoming part of a startup with significant traction, strong backing, and massive growth potential, yet remaining small enough for you to make a real impact on our culture. As a certified B Corporation dedicated to solving a vital social problem, your work matters. We offer highly competitive compensation, including equity for every employee, along with generous benefits:
- Medical and dental insurance, covering 100% of premiums for employees and their families.
- 15 vacation days plus approximately 20 paid holidays annually (including two weeks at the year end).
- Free membership to OneMedical.
- A $600 annual internet stipend.
- A $1,000 annual reimbursable stipend for outside education and training.
- Up to $1,200 per year for student loan repayment assistance.
- 401(k) plan and optional HSA/FSA.
- Working alongside humble, thoughtful, and smart colleagues.
We anticipate the base salary band for this position to be between $75,000 and $90,000, in addition to equity and other benefits. The final offer will be determined by the candidate's experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal equity.
Location and Work Style
This position is fully remote, and we are committed to providing flexibility. While remote work is the norm, travel to Los Angeles (funded by the company) may be required periodically, typically quarterly, for team gatherings and offsites. We value in person connection to build our great culture.
