We invite you to help us co-create the future as we build technology that is redefining how the world develops software.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Technical Engineering Manager to spearhead a team responsible for the development and operation of large-scale distributed systems. The ideal candidate blends deep technical acumen with robust operational instincts and a genuine passion for cultivating high-performing teams. You will be leading the Dedicated Platform Integration team, focusing on the integration of third-party and modular features within the GitLab ecosystem for Dedicated platform hosted SaaS.
Key Responsibilities
- Enable seamless execution in terms of Quality and Speed, collaborating closely with the Product Manager.
- Ensure 3+ 9s availability of Dedicated infrastructure while automating processes for maximum scalability and tenant capacity.
- Provide decisive leadership, constructive feedback, and cultivate an environment where non-value toil is ruthlessly automated and Devops ownership is strictly enforced.
- Continuously enhance owned artifacts by optimizing platforms for self-service ownership by feature implementers.
- Manage the recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of outstanding and productive team members.
- Act as a role model for the team by providing Proof of Concepts, championing an agentic mindset, and drastically simplifying processes to eliminate human toil. Maintain a 'Show and Tell, not only Tell' approach.
- Lead by example in Incident Management best practices, guiding fast resolutions, escalations, and codifying best practices for the entire GitLab organization.
- Adopt a data-driven methodology for prioritization, impact quantification, and technical debt risk management. You must be adept at using AI to illustrate concepts and translate complex technical ideas into clear stakeholder decisions.
What You Will Bring
- A documented history of building and owning large scale distributed services, possessing the technical depth necessary to engage in architecture discussions and guide the team's technical strategy.
- Hands-on experience with fleet management products, including Terraform, AWS, and automated provisioning across 20 or more clusters.
- Proven success in driving operational excellence, specifically having owned services that maintained four-nines (99.99%) SLO performance, and understanding what is required to sustain those levels.
- Experience leveraging AI tooling to significantly boost team productivity, sharing concrete lessons learned from both successes and mistakes.
- A proven track record of building and managing high-performing, accountable team cultures, which includes the difficult skill of managing out underperformance when necessary.
- Comfort in driving complex projects to successful completion without requiring a dedicated Technical Program Manager (TPM).
- Experience leading distributed and remote teams effectively.
