About Wikimedia

Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable organization established in 2003 by Jimmy Wales. Based in San Francisco, it maintains Wikipedia and a family of related open-content projects such as Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, and Wiktionary. 

The Foundation supports more than 700 staff and contractors who handle the technical infrastructure, software (like MediaWiki), grants, finances, global advocacy, and community partnerships. Its mission is to make free knowledge available and reliable for everyone. 

It develops tools and infrastructure that keep Wikimedia projects fast, safe, and accessible. One such tool is ORES, an AI service that helps editors spot and correct problematic edits in real time. 

The Foundation also funds education initiatives, supports volunteer-led events and edit-a-thons globally, and collaborates with partners like Google and UNESCO to promote knowledge equity across cultures and regions. 

Wikimedia’s editorial ecosystem is powered by hundreds of thousands of global volunteers. The Foundation supports them with grants, technical tools, and outreach to help grow and sustain the movement.
